The annual revenue and monthly active player count for Xbox Game Studios and Mojang Studios' popular sandbox game, Minecraft, has been revealed. It's already well-known that the popular sandbox game is a huge success with the masses, though, just how many active players it has and how much revenue it makes has been an unknown quantity up until now. $100m is a lot lower than I’d have guessed. Still a lot of money, Minecraft just seems way bigger than that to me

Since Minecraft is one of the rare birds that you buy once and own forever (I paid $20 in 2011 while it was still in alpha beta, and I’ve been playing on that $20 ever since), it’s outstanding that profits are still trending upwards.

Mojang could have moved to a subscription model, but they didn’t. They could have stopped work on Minecraft years ago and charged $80 for Minecraft 2, but they didn’t. Let us count our blessings.

That’s a good point.

I haven’t paid a dime for it since I bought the game in beta.

I do feel blessed that Minecraft is still around. It truly is a magical game

Well they offer subscriptions for Realms, which is essentially just private server hosting (likely for confused parents) and the Bedrock edition has microtransactions. But Java edition is probably the best $20 I’ve ever spent in gaming

You people sometimes say the judgiest shit 🤣

Confused parents 🙄

Most parents just don’t want to play tech support for their family and have $10 a month so they don’t have to.

Lol sorry, I did not mean it in a judgy way. I just figure most parents don’t know or care enough about Minecraft to host a server themselves but I’d probably do the same thing in their shoes

How is it judgy?

The fact is most humans couldn’t set up a server.

Most humans couldn’t repair a car.

Most humans couldn’t perform an angioplasty.

Most humans can’t play football at the professional level.

Thanks for not making me write that part out. Additionally the microtransactions are blatant in bedrock and stuff is intentionally confusing (like adding a non mojang minecraft server). It is blasting you with shiny stuff to buy all the time. I truly despise bedrock.

Hence why my kids don’t play Bedrock. Oh, and it doesn’t work on Linux, so I’d have to reboot into Windows for them to play.

So we play Java because it’s easy for me to set up a local server, I can install mods, and it works on Linux. If Bedrock worked, they’d probably play more with friends stuck on consoles.

Awesome! You‘re my kind of person. Congrats to your principles!

Btw, you can make a bedrock bridge. I have one of those. Works flawless. Then your kids can play with all their friends.

I’ll have to look into that. Their friends wanted to play once, so I installed Bedrock and everything and then they flaked. But maybe I’ll try again so I’m ready in case they want to play again.

I wonder if that counts merchandising or spinoff game revenue, which is probably more than Minecraft itself at this point

I’d bet the Lego deal brings in a massive chunk of change on its own

The wording makes me think thats just the game & realms revenue. Merch revenue is prob worth that same amount or more id wager

Yeah, we’ve spent way more on merch than on digital products. My kids love the books and pajamas, and we’ve picked up a few other nicknacks here and there as well.

Think of the revenue ratio though!
