Does anybody have experience with the apps Neo Backup, DataBackup or ideally both?
I would like to know if there are any differences in terms of functionality, capability or reliability? Like, is there some kind of app data, that one can backup/restore while the other can’t? Are there speed differences in the backup/restore process? etc.
I’ve searched the internet for some comparisons but couldn’t find much.
For context: I want to transfer all my apps to a new phone. In the past, I’ve used Titanium Backup for this, but it doesn’t seem to be very up-to-date anymore. Now, Neo Backup and Data Backup seem to be the most promising (besides maybe SwiftBackup, but that’s not open source and only available through the Play Store, it seems).
So now I could of course just use one app first, backup everything on my old phone, restore everything on the new one and then look through all the apps to see what worked and what didn’t. But it would be easier if I could get a hint on which one might be more suitable for my needs :)
Also, if you would recommend to use another app instead, please tell me!
Apps that don’t have any important local data (calculator, calendar (synced with web(cal/DAV/…), etc) for which a basic apk backup is enough and doesn’t cause any data corruption.
Apps that have changing important data and implement backups (WhatsApp, signal)
Apps that have important data, but that data is static (voyager, Mixplorer) in which I export the data once using in-app settings
Photos are backed up using immich, internal storage is backed up using restic in termux, started automatically from tasker.
This whole setup doesn’t require root btw, with root you can also backup system settings.
The only thing I’d want to improve is not having to login to all the apps again but I had to do that even with root backups in the past so I’ll have to wait until google finally stops trying to force everyone into their shitty cloud backups. (Tough chance that…)
A question on the self hosted app backups: Do you mean using synchronization functionalities that the apps themselves have built-in? Like using a contacts app that syncs the contacts via CardDav? Or do you actually synchronize the apps themselves with their app-specific data (like settings etc.)? Because if that is possible, I would be very interested!

I used to use neo backup. Works nice.
Bit stopped, nowadays all apps are online synched (to my self hosted server mostly) and so I don’t need backups.
I agree with in-app backup solution.

Mostly carddav caldav and WebDAV. Plus using apps that connect to self hosted services like audiobookshelf or navidrome
Ah I see. Yeah I try to do the same as much as possible. But there still are those apps that just don’t offer such functionality, unfortunately.
I have used Neo Backup before, worked well enough.
Never heard of DataBackup before but their github page doesn’t convince me:

I’ve used both, iirc I had better luck with data backup, but both are fine.
If possible, try seed vault, its included In most custom roms these days
