I feel like thats extremely unlikely to happen, at least banning bootloader unlocking. I’m sure a law could come up eventually, but in order to legally block bootloader unlocking they’d end up banning most consumer and enterprise PCs and SBCs. (Not to mention, how would you enforce this when every state around you would not have this restriction; OEMs will not create a California specific SKU.)

My assumption is the model Graphene is supported on will be sold in California, but with Moto Android by default. The user can then install Graphene on their own.

The problem is these companies have infinite lawyers and will find ways around. With the way you’ve worded it, PCs and Phones will no longer be marketed as personal devices. They will instead be a licensed device you paid to have the privilege to use, and only to be used for communication, work and internet access. This making it so it won’t fall under “general computation”

What we really should be pushing for is open platforms. Getting our friends and family on open platforms, and asking our governments to fund open platforms. The EU was almost doing good until this ID bullshit where you have to have a Play Certified or iOS device.

Matrix (Element Call specifically)

Signal

and thats about it.

I agree with that last statement, but if someone wants to reach me during a time I am available I’d prefer them contact me via E2EE rather than legacy phone line/SMS/MMS. I’d also prefer to use a device that can’t be easily broken into if i lose it.

Phone calls are unencrypted if you choose to use unencrypted services. You can’t install Signal, Deltachat, XMPP or Matrix on a feature phone was my point.

Naw its garbage software too. Pixels are only worth it if you are installing a custom ROM.

that makes no sense because feature phones are insecure devices that provide no functionality beyond unencrypted communication. It would make more sense to purchase a device that can have a third party OS (Like Graphene, Lineage, iode, or PostMarketOS) than it does to buy a feature phone.

I’d just like to throw out PlugBrain and DigiPaws, two open source apps similar to the one youve linked :)

+1 on seedvault, although it’s recommended to use WebDAV over Nextcloud directly. Iirc more recent versions of Seedvault have removed nextcloud as a backup option entirely due to how unreliable it is. You can use Davx⁵ from F-Droid to set up Nextcloud webDAV and make sure your backups are being done reliably.

with a $500m check made out directly to the commander in sleep

You could try MicroG in a work profile. You should be able to download the MicroG app from their website directly, and it should, in theory, “just work” after granting it the permissions.

GSI stands for Generic System Image. Theyre device agnostic and design to work on any phone with an unlocked bootloader made after 2016

I used a GSI on an LG I had and the fingerprint sensor worked fine. I’m not saying it will work on yours, but unless you know someone has the exact same model as you and has confirmed it won’t work, it’d still be worth trying.

nuh uh she’s going to use it to vibrate a blanket for her cat who has anxiety and is only calmed by the warm murr of other cats or an electrical motor

I’ve used both, iirc I had better luck with data backup, but both are fine.

If possible, try seed vault, its included In most custom roms these days

Tired of Google Home not working? This new change will make you furious

FTFY

as someone who originally chose Calyx out of the perceived toxicity of the community, I really could not have said it better myself.

From my experience its a per-battery value. When I had a battery replaced on a family members device it went from 400 something down to 5. So I believe its including previous owner.

System Settings > About Phone > Device Details Category > Battery Information

I’m using Calyx but I assume that its also the same on Graphene, lineage, AOSP, /e/ so on and so fourth.

edit: I dont know why I got downvoted, I’m sorry you dont have this menu also ???

for those of you affected in the us, you can get a free battery repair, $100 cash or $150 in store credit (lmao)

Had mine since late '22. I’m at 1k cycles, so yeah. about a year. Maybe a little less, because I dont charge my phone overnight, and I only charge it to 80%.

I had to get rid of my 4a because of the bad battery thing before that went public. The charger got so hot it melted part of the port, no refund offered, out of warranty. Now you’re telling me this same shit could happen with my 6a?

I know for a fact my next phone will be the Fairphone 6. Fuck this and fuck google.

Ive got no idea other than maybe its something more difficult to port? I know theres a magisk module that does it but 🤷

I like CalyxOS for my threat profile, I recommend the OS for people who want to have more control over their personal data and how its shared.

In order to share the VPN on non-CalyxOS android you’d have to root AFAIK, and rooting introduces a threat vector for bad actors to abuse if you’re Trying to avoid being hacked / being spied on (if you need to hide from the gov’t or people who abuse vulnerabilities)

CalyxOS works w/ Fairphone & some Motos :p

Its not mentioned but I prefer Calyx. Its got better networking features (being able to share your VPN over hotspot and between profiles is a big one for me), and I prefer MicroG (FLOSS) over Sandboxed Play Services (Proprietary). + The calyx devs are generally just really pleasant to talk to. Calyx works on Pixels, Fairphones, a few Motos and sometimes other devices if they can have their bootloader relocked.

Saying signature spoofing for all ROMs is less secure is misinformation, see CalyxOS’s explanation: https://calyxos.org/docs/guide/microg/#is-microg-a-security-risk-in-calyxos-because-it-requires-signature-spoofing

Ive had too many fights in this community with people who dont use custom ROMs and dont care about privacy to agree with you.

Right after my bf just got a Pixel 8 too. 😐 Fucking foul, I will be importing a fairphone when my 6a dies.

Ive said it b4 and I’ll say it again, its not for you, its for your family and friends who just won’t get the fuck off facebook. if youre the kind of person who cares about risk mitigation more than the all or nothing approach, this is a perfectly fine recommendation for those people who just refuse to get rid of FB.
