Valve has changed its DMCA policy, and will now “delete non-compliant DMCA reports and suspend the reporter’s Steam community access” if said user is spamming DMCA complaints.

Imagine being that pathetic that you try to get a rise out of people by targeting their works of passion and art.

They could be copright trolls who are trying to force Steam to do just what they did so they can claim damages for lost revenue on delays on actually legitimate claims. It might be a bet on how well they think they will be able to defend against perjury from the people actually able to sue. Mods aren’t like YouTube channels, a lot of them aren’t getting a decent revenue stream that they claim they lost or to help them in their defense.

THIS shit is why Steam continues to dominate the market. I have a healthy wariness of Steam’s ubiquity and power within the industry, but they continue to prove that they got it for a reason. Imagine if fucking YouTube treated DMCA trolls this way.

I’d love to find the original thread the article cites, but their link just leads back to the article.

I followed the source in the linked article to a Vice article, that then linked to the source, a Reddit post. Stormdark UI for Terraria looks to have been hit.

Same! I thought the Terraria devs were pretty positive toward the modding community.

I don’t see any indication that it’s the games’ developers that are doing this.

From the info I found, the consensus is it’s a troll who found a way to abuse the Steam reporting. Apparently the list of games being hit by these takedowns is huge, like 25+ games.

Copyright holders who believe their IP is being violated by a given mod?

People like Nintendo?

Then host them somewhere else. Steam is gatekeeping mods; you can’t download them if you have the game from somewhere else, except with the cumbersome steamcmd cli tool made for servers.
