Today’s game is Elder Scrolls Daggerfall. All the Oblivion i’ve been playing has been making me want to give this game another go. So i ended up downloading the Daggerfall Unity Version and a few mods.

One thing i really like about this game and it’s predecessor too is just how large the worlds are. They’re so massive that they feel realistic, it’s hard to believe this was all done on DOS, even though they had to make a ton of restrictions.

i ended up making a female Khajiit, as i realized i haven’t ever played a Khajiit since my very first Elder Scrolls game (Skyrim). I made a female one specifically because i wanted to mix things up. I downloaded a mod that changed the Khajiit to Cathay Khajiit and i named her Nazita. I installed the mod because i initially planned the character to be a Cathay and not a Ohmes-raht Khajiit.

The first dungeon was rough at first as i kept walking right past the lever and stopping to fight everything. One of my most memorable mistakes was walking into this room with a Bear in it for some reason. I want to know who got this bear down here because i have no clue how it could have gotten here otherwise.

After i finally found the switch i took the lift up and just duked out the skeleton. I was worried it might start firing arrows but luckily it left me be once i got up.

Immediately i went for a town, specifically one called Holmarket. When i got there the sun was setting and i made for an inn. I stopped by a General Store i found though and met a guy who wanted me to recover a scroll in return for info about my boat crash.

I ended up going straight there. The dungeon was full of Mages and Harpies. I ended up having to run past them all because they were all too high a level to really fight. I found the Scroll at the bottom of the dungeon in a room filled with water and with Slaughterfish at the bottom.

When i got out i got a message saying i was being watched. I wasn’t eager to find out what that meant so i booked a journey straight back to town. Luckily i made it with really no events.

I got back to town when this creepy fog covered the place. I went inside and turned in the quest, before popping by the pawn store. I ended up having to wait, but while i was waiting i was jumped by an assassin. I managed to kill him and took his bow for later. I was planning to run another dungeon based quest but ended up running errands around town for the rest of the night. Everyone in town made it hard though because they all hate me now for some reason and won’t tell me where this lady is. So i only got one or two quests done.

I’m playing through Morrowind for the first time right now (past a few hours in at least), and I’ve been blown away at just how much more interesting of a plot and setting it has compared to everything Bethesda ever made after it. The miss chance, spell fail chance, and non-regenerating magicka were always enough to scare me away before, but I finally understood what a huge impact fatigue has on everything, and how much more terrible you are at low-level skills compared to their later games.

I also like the progression of my character walking around slow as shit at level 1 taking forever to get anywhere vs running around at 30mph jumping from canton to canton in Vivec like it’s nothing now.

I maintain that Morrowind has the best lore and main quest story Bethesda has ever written.

I really got to try Daggerfall, some of the mods radically improve the coherence and depth of the open world.

For some reason, I really like the graphical style (probably nostalgia).

The style also kinda has a charm to it.

I agree. I love the style. But that being said, I have some younger family members (in their 20s) who are into gaming and they think this is some old school stuff that’s unappealing (they like modern RPGs).

The general vibe i really love. The NPC portraits i don’t really care for but everything else looks gorgeous. I especially love the snowy region

Daggerfall is my favorite Elder Scrolls game and what the community has done for it is amazing. A lot of people hate the dungeon design but honestly its my favorite part. I love how mazelike they are and I have become very good at navigating them. The immersion is good too if you can wrap your head around it. Most quests having a deadline really makes you question whether or not you can fit that 8 hour rest in. Caught a disease from a rat? You wont know it until later when you start feeling too sick to travel. Cursed with lycanthropy? Better get out of town when the full moon hits. I wish they had stuck to this formula for elder scrolls games but as others in the fanbase have pointed out, these mechanics have been thrown out in favor of attracting a broader audience which sucks but I understand

The immersion is so much fun to get involved with. It can get a little frustrating at times, but damn is it so cool most of the time. The scale of the world is probably my favorite part. Having something of that size just makes it feel so much more immersive
