It doesn’t do that by itself. Go on. Do it.
Edit:
What’s the Google Play System?
The Google Play System (also called Google System Updates) is a way for Android devices to receive updates to core components without requiring a full OS update. This includes security patches, bug fixes, and new features for things like the Play Store and Google Play Services. It was introduced with Android 10 and works on most modern Android devices, including phones, tablets, and wearables.
For those getting their panties in a knot:
For the majority of Android users, Google Play System updates matter, and no, they don’t always install automatically.
Just stop.

It’s bizarre that my phone updates everything else 0.2 seconds after an update comes out, sometimes while I’m literally using the app in question, but it won’t auto apply an important security update?
Beats me!
Nice reminder. But how do you do it?
Every device is different, but usually Settings > Biometrics and Security > Google Play system update
On Pixels it’s Settings > About phone > Android version > Google Play System Update
Is there a recent vulnerability that I need to know about ?
Not that I’m aware of, but it’s best practice to keep your stuff updated
Considering Google’s track record on simplifying UIs by taking away features, I’ll take my chances, and only update for severe threats.
Sadly software updates have turned in to an enshitification vector.
I guarantee you that if they wanted to enshittify Google play services they’d just make the update mandatory.
google play services is the enshitification
Not always, but security is important.
Mine does.
Based :)
Edit: Why is this getting downvoted? You people are weird.
I don’t know what that means.
It means “cool, but a lot of people would disagree, and you’re brave for saying so”.
It means cool
“Based” on what? :) I used to think that it might mean “biased”, based on the some of the usage that I have been encountering. I have finally come to the conclusion that slang is pretty much stupid. Bleah.
Ok? Not sure what I’m supposed to say to that.
Just let me complain, I guess. For what it’s worth, I didn’t downvote.
Lol fair enough. I appreciate the honesty haha
Sweet!
Done, thank you.
Good job!
Pixel automatically updates play services
I think every phone does that. What I’m referring to specifically is the Google Play system, which is different from the Google Play Services. Google Play services is part of the Google Play system.
I meant to say google Play system, which pixel still updates automatically but doesn’t alert that a reboot is necessary
I get it now! From what I was able to tell, some phones update automatically but don’t reboot, some do update automatically but not as frequently and some don’t update automatically at all.
