I’m looking for a (preferably) open source or foss android app that can tune into web radio stations. There are plenty of apps for mainstream radio stations, but what about an app that allows you to connect to some awesome Internet radio stations? I remember the old shoutcast stuff. I dunno if this stuff is dead or thriving? Thank you.

SomaFM works great in a browser, I’ve never seen the need for an app. Although, they do have one… I don’t know if it’s open source or based on anything open source.

I’ll check that out thank you. Although, another commenter mentioned radiodroid. Seems to be everything I wanted

For actual RF based radio around the planet there’s websdr and kiwisdr. Both those platforms have actual wideband receivers run by (mostly) radio amateurs and accessible by any web browser. It’s like having access to a collection of shortwave radio receivers.

Broadcastify is a platform where people share internet streams of local radio transmitters, also accessible via the web.

There’s radio applications like TuneInRadio that package some of this up and slather it in advertising.

Oh this is interesting. I recently (within the last year) found a few websites that offer SDR radio tuners for free. I thought that was so cool and I was able to tune into stuff using their equipment over the web.

I’m basically looking for an android app that lets me browse some internet radio stations (music). I probably should have been more detailed in my original post. But you have actually opened my eyes to some other things I’m interested in.

Is it specifically radio you want? The world seems to have moved to podcasts. Radio vs podcasts is like broadcast TV vs streaming, people now stream exactly what they want instead of just watching whatever is on TV. I’ve got plenty of podcast suggestions and AntennaPod is a great app for that.

If I search for radio on f-droid, it come up with Transistor and RadioUpnp (amongst others).

So I really love Sirius XM stations…they do charge ten bucks a month for it. I was kinda wanting an app that offers the same experience but free of charge. Obviously, I would support any app or station that I love. I’m just looking for more options.
