Is this why we have no more Cyberpunk? Also when will they work on original IP?
No, this is done by a third party, like how the Oblivion remastered was done. Oversight is done by CDPR though so I have hopes that the story will hold up. They also know they have a high bar after Cyberpunk’s release.
Their roadmap is the same, from what they publicly share. All effort is being poured into W4, while Cyberpunk (2, 2078, who knows), is probably in early development, with the majority of the team swiveling to that once W4 releases
I get that with a remaster, I’ve seen that with other games. Why would a third-party studio contribute additional content to a game made by a different studio?
There’s a multitude of reasons. Contracting/consulting has been a long standing thing in tech. This is the perfect application, they have something they want to do, they know it’ll make money, but they don’t have the staff capacity to do it themselves without throwing out their roadmap. So they go to someone else, write up contracts, have milestones and requirements, and the other team gets it done for them. Remaster, DLC, Hell Oblivion did all of Fallout NV for Bethesda. There are no rules on what can or can’t be done. CDPR has done their QA through consultancy firms before, and that’s pretty standard.
why would you hire a contractor? maybe they are experts in one particular thing.
Most of the software industry uses contractors for most things, just, in general.
Here’s an example of that not working so well: Halo Infinite.
They hired a bunch of contractors to build the engine.
Contractors contracts are up, they do… something else now, somewhere else, who knows.
Now that the engine’s done, give it over to the artists and gameplay developers and… oh. Whats that?
Its confusing? Has bugs?
Uh well uh… the code is ‘self documenting’, right?
Hire some other contractors to fix the engine!
… etc.
And that’s basically how Halo Infinite happened.
Remember when somebody figured out that like, the loading screen, was re-downloading the same image, like, 400,000 times?
Remember how like local split screen co-op does exist in the game engine… but… you can’t have it… for some reason?
Good times, good times.
You basically could not come up with a stupider way to try a design a complex piece of software if you tried.
But, retaining actually knowledgeable employees and their knowledge that their managers didn’t realize was important, well, that’d mean they get full benefits, and fuck that, so instead, lets double or triple development time (and cost) and release a half baked product.
Genius.
