The high-profile port has had a middling start, raising questions about the long-term viability of delayed multiplatform releases and the true cost of exclusivity and subscriptions.

Obsidian was never owned by Bethesda, tho they became a subsidary of Xbox Game Studios in 2018.

They have always kinda been an “on commission” type studio. Before The Outer Worlds 1, I don’t even know of any Obsidian developed game that wasn’t part of another big dev/publisher’s series (a lot of their titles are sequels).

It’s funny how they’re still considered to be the sequels developer, despite the fact the last one they released on commission was Dungeon Siege 3 back in 2011. Since then, all of their releases have been original titles, although some were part of other franchises like South Park, and they did get brought in to collaborate on a couple games which were free-to-play and therefore pretty forgettable.

Their earliest original title was Alpha Protocol. Fantastic game, it’s a shame it didn’t sell very well. Sega owns the rights as the publisher and they don’t seen interested in doing anything with it.

Arguably their biggest original was Pillars of Eternity, which broke a few records when they launched the funding campaign on Kickstarter.
