Bought the Ultimate Edition from GoG when it was on sale, as I haven’t done any of the DLCs before.
Boone is still my favourite companion, but Veronica is my bruiser. I know ED-E is referred to with he/him pronouns, but I read it as “Edie” not “Eddie” so the eyebot is a honorary girl ✨

A gaming community free from the hype and oversaturation of current releases, catering to gamers who wait at least 12 months after release to play a game. Whether it’s price, waiting for bugs/issues to be patched, DLC to be released, don’t meet the system requirements, or just haven’t had the time to keep up with the latest releases.
That’s a unique take on ED-E. To my eyes, it’s phonetically Eddie, but other regions could see it differently, and you’re right, it’s a robot so it doesn’t much matter.
Boone and ED-E is an overpowered combination due to the way their perks synergise. But not everyone plays for power. Veronica is a great choice too. I like the one you pick up in a bar, “Rose of Sharon Cassidy”. Or just Cass. I think that’s the one. She has one of the coolest ending cards, too (referring to the epilogue slideshow at the end, not a spoiler!). There are a few requisites to get her best card, though — male courier and NCR ending, IIRC.
The first two DLC are kinda shit. The first one, Dead Money, was divisive for its stealth mechanic. It’s kind of broken. It’s either too easy or too hard depending on your style and experience. Honest Hearts was just not good. But the four DLC’s have a story that is worth experiencing and that’s the order to do them in. Third is Old World Blues which is probably the best Fallout DLC to date. Lonesome Road is just pretty, with a choice at the end with far reaching implications. So save that adventure for when you’re sure who you want to side with at the end!
New Vegas is objectively the best Fallout game. It’s not my favorite, but it’s the one I respect the most as a game. 3 was more fun to me, but it was kinda dumb at times. 4 was even more fun, but it was downright stupid.
Left my ❤️ in Sierra Madre
Dead Money is the best, Lonesome Road was meh for me.
I feel like grading NV DLCs can take a dissertation-long amount of pages. Reading and nodding all along, I feel like you are right in the pure gameplay dimension, but story as it told can shuffle them into a different order, and involve a lot of argument, not to say about another dimension - user freedom and feel of corridor-ness of the experience that once again puts addons in different buckets due to their design. Thinking of it, I feel like the thread asking about grading them, posted at the right time, can become legendary by Fedi standards.
Boone is just great, his story is just tragic, and his armour at so freaking cool. I played with his exclusively the first time I played a number of years ago, but this time I wanted to try another companion. Picked Veronica because she’s a cutie, and she can wear the power armour. Loving her so far, with her going in and punching everyone and everyone, while I snipe from a safe distance 😂 I was very enamored with Cass when I met her at the Outpost tho.
I have completed Old World Blues, just the other day, but haven’t started the other DLCs yet. I love fun, silly Science and the Stealth Suit was well worth it. I’m a sneaky, charismatic scientist, with 50 points in Melee, from what I understand I should be okay with Dead Money 😬 oh and I’m a NCR girl, no question. Next playthrough though will be a House run and then a Yes Man.
The first Fallout game I ever played was 4, and I have fond memories. Playing New Vegas now I can see why the hardcore fallout fans felt a bit let down by 4, with its lack of dialogue options a sticking point for me. I do want to go back and play 1, 2, and 3, so I can get the full experience.
76 isn’t real and can’t hurt me 😂
About 76, because it gets a lot of outdated hate…
76 today I feel is mostly exploration + F4 tweaked building system minus settlers. I got it almost for free and tempered my expectations…and what I got positively surprised me. The world is beautiful in F76, building feels good (more limited than in F4, but at the same time more personal, usable and fun IMO).
It’s basically Wild Wasteland the game. There is some story, it’s better story than F4 from my perspective but in such amounts it may as well not exist. Oh and atom shop does not, in fact, require you to buy shit -.-’ Almost all of it is tied to building, and you can get currency in-game.
It’s fun. Beautiful view wise, immersive world wise, and somewhat emptish. Online elements are easy to ignore - mostly it’s events in which I didn’t partake for a long time due to being busy exploring.
I rambled again :( It’s just that F76 went a long way but everyone shits on it :(
The only good thing to be said about Fallout 76 is that the latest expansion features voice work from Walton Goggins (The Ghoul, on the Amazon streaming series, but he’s done a lot more work and is generally a good actor). But like Elder Scrolls Online, it pretty much just exists to print money, which is why they haven’t focused on single-player games since, and the one time they did (Starfield), it basically just sucked.
Fallout and Fallout 2 are not at all the same kind of game as 3, 4, and New Vegas. They’re turn-based strategy games with RPG elements (dialogue and skill points). But it’s mainly strategy, where you position your pieces and manage your action points (which are present in the newer ones but more of an homage to the first two). Not saying they’re not worth playing, but they’re a whole other genre of game. Though, if you do like those, the Wasteland games exist as well. Fallout (the first one) was inspired by Wasteland, and Wasteland 2 came out after Fallout 3 and maybe after Fallout 4, and it was due to popular demand for a resurgence of that type of game. Now there’s a Wasteland 3. Something to keep in mind if you like the first two Fallouts. Which, by the way, are always being given away on GOG, it seems like. As for 3, New Vegas is basically like a “total conversion mod” for 3. It’s the same engine, with updated graphics/GUI elements, and gameplay features. 3 was my first Fallout and will always be special to me, but compared with New Vegas, the writing is just weak. Otherwise it’s a lot of fun.
If you ever do go back and replay 4, do it after playing Fallout 3. There’s a mod for Fallout 4 called Project Valkyrie. Get it, and the mods connected to it (I think there are 3 or 4 of them? Maybe 5). Fair warning, the modder added a bunch of adult content. For example, you have the option to turn The Institute into a sex club called “The Sinstitute.” You can ignore most of the adult content. And you should, because what else it adds to the experience is worth going for. For one, first and foremost, it allows you to unite all the factions of the Commonwealth. All of them. So they all have a point when they say, “okay supreme leader, now is the time to kill all our enemies” and you have to just go with it… or the game kinda stops. With these mods, you can say “no fuck that, I am the leader and I say we will have peace.” And then it lets you try that. There are skill and speech checks to actually make it happen, but you can pursue peace with any faction, considering you’re in charge of all of them. Oh, and the name Valkyrie… it refers to an NPC from Fallout 3 who makes a comeback in 4 (but only in this mod). This person is essential to securing peace with their faction. They also make a mod, I don’t think it’s compatible with the rest, but it lets you be evil from the start. I think that’s them.
I just personally don’t care for multiplayer experiences, so I avoid anything like ESO and 76; wasted too many hours of my 20s on WoW, LoL, and Rust 😂 and I haven’t watched the show, though I have heard great things about it!
I like turn-based strat games, so I’m keen to play 1 and 2 :), and I don’t mind (maybe I love?) the Bethesda jank so 3 should be fine haha I have heard great things about Wasteland so that’s also on my list. You have great taste! And I’ll check out that mod pack for 4, because you sold me on “The Sinstitute” and the rest is a bonus 😂 thank you for the info and recommendations! I really appreciate it,
I’m going to have to give that a try, my biggest gripe with fo4’s story is that the factions are all mutually incompatible despite having serious overlaps. There is no reason the skeleton crew of the railroad can’t be moved to the castle to become the covert brancj of the Minutemen, they’re literally fighting for the same cause. Same way that the brotherhood murdering the institute instead of claiming it as theirs and pulling turning all the scientists into scribes is just so very short sighted.
If you see ED as two separate letters, then the Edie pronunciation makes more sense. Ed-E vs E.D.E, I reckon.
Oddly, Mass Effect 3 did this, except theirs was EDI and is pronounced Edie. EDI started as a malevolent AI found on Earth’s moon in the first Mass Effect, only it’s not revealed until late in ME3 that that was EDI. You formally meet EDI in ME2 as the ship’s computer, which the pilot originally hates but then forms a bond with. In ME3, EDI is given a body, and the pilot who once hated her/it develops a romantic relationship with her. It’s a hell of a story.
I may have only played the Mass Effect trilogy for the first time just last year, but I think EDI in ME being pronounced Edie and me always calling ED-E “Eddie” is solidified by them being two completely different characters.
Though I certainly see how ED-E can go the other way, and it’s fine. It’s certainly not a hill I’m going to die on.
