I’ve actually not skipped many battles so lvl wise it’s all good. I remember playing on the Dreamcast originally and when a battle was about to trigger the console would make a noise so I would pause the game to try an skip it.

I have played through it enough times at this point that I actively and purposefully grind the materials I need well ahead of time, though I don’t think I’ve ever 100%'d the game. I think the worst was getting the death prevention accessories for my group so I could take on the angel of death without getting one shot. But I have spent an exorbitant amount of time leveling off loopers near their landmark.
