can you link a guide to flash custom firmware (lineageos) on debian on a redmi 9c or help me flash it?
cross-posted from: https://linux.community/post/1031833 > most guides I found online are for windows based computers and those that even name linux are outdated. > > * Linux distro I run: debian 12.5, adb and fastboot installed through apt > > * Phone I want to experiment with: redmi 9c > > * Firmware I'm installing: https://xdaforums.com/t/rom-13-unofficial-lineageos-20-0-unified-for-redmi-9a-9c-10a-blossom.4609367/ > > `fastboot devices` recognizes the device and I can also boot the phone to fastboot: it shows a black (not blank) screen with the word FASTBOOT printed orange. > > I tried following https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/complete-guide-flashing-factory-images-android-using-fastboot-0175277/ but `fastboot flashing unlock` and `fastboot oem unlock` return `FAILED (remote: 'Token Verify Failed, Reboot the device > ')` > > developer options and OEM unlocking are both activated on the device

How difficult is it to change an unsupported phone’s broken screen?
I still use an unsupported 2018 Asus ZenFone Max (M1) ZB555KL X00PD with a broken screen. I’d like to change the screen. Measures of the device: 156 x 77.5 x 10.6 mm (6.14 x 3.05 x 0.42 in). Now, I don’t know if these are standard measurements for a certain set of smartphones (the ones that can be held and used with just one hand) or if any company can choose what size it uses for their devices, making finding a screen that fits incredibly more difficult. The other question is, how difficult would it be to do it myself?
fedilink

is there any lock screen that rotates automatically?
I explain what I mean with lock screen: not the launcher. Lunar launcher (home screen) rotates automatically. Im looking for something like that but for the lock screen: the screen a user sees when he puts the device to sleep and turns it on again or reboots the system and has to enter the password.

several questions about how ‘portable’ hardware specs are, when the software in a device is changed (migrating pixel 7a stock rom to graphene or lineage)
according to the vendor, pixel 7a can scale up to 90Hz. Will that also be the case with graphene or lineage or is this something that completely depends on software? If a device's screen is bright, will the foss I install be also bright? the pixel 7a has a 64MP camera shooter. Will the foss I install use it to its full potential? If a phone's battery last much longer now, will that also be the case if I install graphene or lineage on the device? The pixel 7a with stock rom can wireless charge. Will that also be the case with graphene or lineage? If the camera phone's tends toward darker colors, will that also be the case with graphene or lineage installed?

is bluetooth’s data rate good enough for lossless audio? (flac, pixel 7a, pixel a-series earbuds, graphene, lineage)
the android device I might buy with the audio format I usually listen to. Some of my flacs are way over 3 mbps (up to 6 mbps). The bluetooth on my desktop supports speeds up to 1 mbps. If the pixel is going to support similar rates, I don't see how this is going work. ETA: Im still going to nuke the device and install graphene or lineage on it. Do both foss support higher rates?
fedilink

several questions about the pixel a-series earbuds
if I buy a pixel 7a within the next 5 days they'll add on top of the 20% off they already offered, a free pair of pixel a-series buds (retail price $100), so I'd get a 33% discount on both items. online reviews say it's compatible with every android device, but Im going to buy this model to delete the software and install either graphene or lineage, so, will these buds work with either OS?
fedilink

how do I make sure the pixels 7a I buy is completely relockable, including bootloader, on non-stock software?
I visited 3 stores looking for the pixels 7a. One of these stores (best buy) sells it at a 20% discount for only 2 weeks, brand new, 128 GB, so I may go for it to buy and nuke to install graphene OS, then relock it. A poster suggested me to avoid verizon, because they lock the bootloader to prevent you installing anything else. This one seems to be a pixels directly from google: on a table displaying other google devices and earbuds, but I wouldn't want to buy something I cannot relock on non-stock software. ETA: what port does it use for charging?

broke my 7 a couple of months ago

physically? or did you nuke the software and couldn’t reboot anymore?

When you install graphene, you literally just have five apps and a handful of system apps that are built into android.

but you can still install libraries like f-droid or droid-ify, right?

is there any application to automatically turn an android device off after a predetermined period of time?
When I go to bed I use my smartphone to listen to something soothing and I fall asleep. It usually takes less than an hour. Im looking for an application that turns the device off after one hour, pretty much like the sleep command works (on linux): `sleep 60m && shutdown now` alternatively, your ways to save as much battery as possible after the hour passes (won't use the device for the next 8 hours)
fedilink

frequent updates and feels like a better version of android.

why is this relevant if I plan to nuke the device and install graphene or lineage on it?

if you run lineage or graphene on a pixel 6 or 7, what’s your experience?
thinking about paying $500 for a pixel 6 to nuke it and install either lineage or graphene. Main reasons: security, I want to degoogle, hate bloatware, I want complete freedom to choose what apps I want on my device, smartphones are notoriously known for their short support cycles (to me 4 years is not enough). what I don't know is why graphene developers have chosen proprietary hardware from what has to be one of the most foss unfriendly companies

what did you update? the device or aurora store?

How come I get different app versions when I load f-droid from my desktop compared to loading the f-droid client (app) on my phone?
desktop shows all available versions, including the newest ones. This is not always the case when I load the f-droid app on my phone. If I check the f-droid website, results are the same as using the desktop.
fedilink

any idea why my phone doesn’t show any aurora store app anymore?
phone loads the icons but even for popular apps like firefox, it shows nothing.
fedilink

is there any non voip based foss messenger with voice and video options?
apparently I didn't ask the correct question with my last post: I'm looking for a foss messenger I can also send audio and video with and have a conversation over the smartphone not needing to use voip (and not needing a phone number).
fedilink

to use element I need to provide an email address. Do I also need to provide a valid phone number?

for those of you who out of principle refuse to use google store, what f-droid voip client do you recommend?
I basically want to talk and send messages and pictures, video call is not really that important. other foss voip clients not currently on f-droid are welcomed.

is there any way to use gsf with aurora instead of google play?
gsf stands for google Services Framework. I use aurora instead of google play, but installing a flight app, aurora states I have to use gsf and if I try to start the application, I get a message: 'check that google play is enabled on your device' is there any way to install gsf not using google play?

I’m gonna have to ask you to elaborate:

how can I keep it offline? I need to keep the device online to receive the code, right?

Is it a sign of bad manufacturing / software / cheap materials if a smartphone gets hot while charging?
I have an asus x00p that doesn't get hot while charging. 2018 manufactured. I also have a xiaomi M2006C3MG that gets hot, 2020 manufactured. Why?

is it safe to use an android 8 device made in 2018 to 2fauthenticate?
I own a handy asus x00p with android 8 that fits my hand (released in 2018). I have a newer android 11 device (released in 2020) but it's larger and heavier and I don't really like using it. What are the security risks, if I go ahead using the 2018 model to 2fauthenticate?
fedilink

Do I get a code list after scanning a QR code to 2fauthenticate?
absolute noob asking how QR codes work to 2fauthenticate. So I do scan the QR code and then I get a list of codes I can use to log in? or do I have to scan the QR code each time I want to 2fauthenticate?
fedilink

Is there any way to emulate aegis authenticator (fdroid) on an ubuntu based computer?
I can access my employer’s local network if I authenticate with a 2fa. They suggest proprietary software, but aegis authenticator (found in fdroid) works fine. The thing is, the phone’s screen is too small and it’s very cumbersome to navigate the screen and to click, it’s so bad I don’t want to use it, because fonts are so small you cannot read anything. It’s like they didn’t even try to optimize the local network for devices. However, if I could emulate this app on an ubuntu based computer, I’d use it. Can it be done?
fedilink

how much battery does a device consume in sleep mode?
I use my device mostly as a camera and a flashlight when I work night shift. I only need the device 4 times during those 8 hours, 2 minutes each time the most (8 minutes total) Would it make sense to turn the device off after using it or is the amount of battery I'm gonna save negligible? Another question would be: Would it make sense to turn the device off when I leave the workplace? 16 hours of savings, or would this also be negligible?

How do I backup my device from an ubuntu computer and save the file in the computer?
I'm ready to debloat (with universal-android-debloater), but before I do that Id like to backup the OS in the device to my computer. If I want to backup with the stock ROM, Im redirected to a commercial service Im not going to use. If I want to backup with twrp, it won't let me backup via usb cable to the computer. There must be a way to backup from the computer to the computer via usb, correct? ETA: Can I backup with universal-android-debloater?
fedilink

Is this the right way to debloat a device? asus x00p with TWRP
stock asus x00p android with twrp installed. So, I boot to recovery (twrp) and search the directories to find the apps I don't want and delete em. If this is the way to go, could you tell me in what directories do I find these apps? If this is not the right way, what is it then?

Several questions about TWRP
I finally installed TWRP 3.7.0 onto my device (asus X00PD). 1. After booting to TWRP in the device and entering my password a terminal opens. It reads: `Unable to mount storage` `data successfully decrypted, new block device: ./dev/block/dm-o’` `updating partition details…` `...done` `full selinux support is present` `MTP enabled` Is it all good to go, or is something wrong? (Unable to mount storage). 2. From the device, I can use adb sideload to upgrade TWRP and any other .zip or .iso I want, correct? 3. There is an option to make a backup. However, I somehow cannot save the backup to my computer via the usb cable. Why is this? My computer (ubuntu 23.10) shows the android device and I can cd to it. 4. I wanted to use TWRP to locate bloatware and delete it. However, I don’t know what directories I should start looking for to get rid of facebook and degoogle the device. Help appreciated ETA: according to xda, to boot into recovery mode I have to press power + vol down a while during booting and let the buttons go. However, the only way to boot into recovery that works for me is to boot to fastboot from the device and load `fastboot oem reboot-recovery` from my computer’s terminal. If any of you could help with the correct keys and time (when to let go), let me know.
fedilink

It looks like the native OS will flash the original recovery partition back if you try to boot Android without flashing a custom. ROM.

so if I cannot install lineage on my device (package no longer maintained) and I’m stuck with the native OS, that means I’m also stuck with the original recovery partition and cannot install TWRP?

have I installed TWRP?
* computer: ubuntu 23.10 * device: asus X00PD, can only root it from the computer (no install from usb option available on the device). On the computer, I ran: `fastboot flash recovery /home/alice/TWRP/twrp.img` it returned: `Sending 'recovery' (50272 KB) OKAY [ 1.596s] Writing 'recovery' OKAY [ 0.464s] Finished. Total time: 2.068s` I thought I have flashed TWRP to the device's recovery partition. However, after booting to recovery, I don't see TWRP, I see the stock Android recovery. Unless the recovery partition can support both Android recovery and TWRP at the same time I haven't installed TWRP. How do I install TWRP?

booting to fastboot recovery mode and to custom recovery mode (TWRP), trouble with the buttons on the device (power, vol+, vol-)
I have no trouble booting to fastboot: I simply press power + vol. up simultaneously and that's it. However, I always have trouble booting to custom recovery, in my case, TWRP. For my model (asus X00PD) I should press power + vol. down and then release, however, I don't know when I have to release or if I have to press power and a bit later the vol. down button, nor do I know if the device only boots to this mode when the usb cable is not plugged in. advice welcome

How do you maximize your device’s battery life?
I found https://www.androidauthority.com/maximize-battery-life-882395/ but I don't know if it applies to every device, or if I should charge my asus X00PD differently
fedilink

thank you for breaking that command down for me. The command should look:

fastboot flash recovery /home/alice/TWRP/twrp.img

However, I still don’t understand this:

flash - flash (write) to the named partition

I haven’t named any partition, there is no path to the partition, is there?

Installing TWRP to an asus X00PD, cannot root the device from the device (android 8)
If I cannot root the device from the device (no option to install from usb) I'll have to flash twrp-3.7.0_9-0-X00P.img from my computer (ubuntu 23.10) using fastboot (bootloader) I plan to follow this instructions: https://xdaforums.com/t/recovery-unofficial-x00pd-v3-3-1-teamwin-recovery-project-24-06-2019.3942717/ unless you mean the instructions are outdated and I shouldn't do this. However I have questions: the link shows this command: `fastboot flash recovery $RECOVERYNAME` I don't understand it: Do I have to change $RECOVERYNAME with twrp.img? Neither do I understand what follows: Boot to OLD TWRP > INSTALL > Select Image > Navigate to twrp.img > Select it & Swipe to Flash, in the device? from my computer with fastboot? As of now there is no TWRP installed in the device. help appreciated.

has any of you installed Lineage OS on an asus X00PD?
I unbricked my asus X00PD back to stock rom and now that I know how to do it, I can experiment with other OS like Lineage. According to the official Lineage site, my model (asus X00PD) is not compatible. However, according to https://tweakdroid.com/lineage/asus-zenfone-max-m1-zb556kl-zenfone-max-m1-m2-m3-zb555kl-x00pd-x00p-1/#toc5 it's supported. Has any of you successfully installed Lineage on a X00PD? If you know of other non proprietary OS I could install on my smartphone, I'm all ears.

Unbricking a device with an ubuntu computer, trouble with .bat and .sh files and the device’s chipset
This is the second time I try to unbrick my device (asus X00PD) with my computer (Ubuntu 23.10) and Im not very smart, so I hope you are patient. Turns out I can log in to fastboot mode on my device and my computer recognizes the device through fastboot: ``` fastboot devices KCAJJFOES633VUN fastboot ``` I’m following these instructions: https://xdaforums.com/t/fastboot-edl-unbrick-asus-zenfone-max-m1-asus_x00pd-ww_x00pd-zb555kl-zb556kl.3874245/, Method 2:- Flashing Raw Firmware In Fastboot Mode. I downloaded https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=10rvsIsw3pZ78Lg8eMdrgsvBqujRrreNj, (raw firmware) and extracted it. Inside this directory there are 2 .bat files: 8937.bat for Snapdragon 430, the one I need for my device and 8917.bat for Snapdragon 425. There is also a .sh file (I work with ubuntu): fastboot.sh I don’t know how to run the .bat file I need on a ubuntu terminal. I also run ./fastboot.sh, but that only rebooted the device into an on and off loop. How should I proceed?

wait, does ‘KC63JG60633VUN recovery’ on my terminal mean I have accessed the bios?

I don’t remember anymore, this happened 9 months ago. I remember trying to install lineage and following their instructions, but then lineage seems to be incompatible with my device. Then I, apparently, tried twrp and somehow installed it.

FWIW I don’t care about the data, I just want to install a rom that works, preferably a non proprietary one.

ETA: On my desktop’s terminal if I type ‘adb devices’ it returns: KC63JG60633VUN recovery. How far am I?

Im a noob, so please be patient:

do you mean the desktop’s bios or the device’s bios?

Incidentally, I just accessed twrp 3.7.0 I somehow installed in the device months ago. Is this the bios you mention?

Is it possible to unbrick an asus X00PD with an Ubuntu desktop?
Device: an ASUS X00PD, computer: Ubuntu 23.10 with ADB and fastboot installed. I cannot even bootload the device: On the device I press power + volume up buttons to enter bootloader mode but the device stays there half a second. The device then turns itself down, restarts itself and cycles like that till the battery dies. I don't want to go back to stock software, Id install anything that works for this particular device.

redmi 9c, how can I disable google’s ad to use their voiceboard when turning the device off?
