Yeah, but it’s possible - maybe not everything, but for a lot of components it is possible.

I’d love to buy a Fairphone. But sadly it is behind in so many features, that I simply can’t.

-no water proof (sadly a requirement in my profession)

-no wireless charging (why? just why? There is no good reason for them to not include that, especially as it is finally adopted by a lot of spaces, e.g. in airline seats, etc.)

  • mediocre camera

I counted the days towards Fairphone releasing the featureset of the Fairphone 5 and was so disappointed.

I am up for other recommendations, though. The first person to name google will be downvoted, though. I literally wrote my lawyer yesterday as they are treating service cases in a illegal manner.

Absolutely. Below zero is more story oriented but still great.

Yeah, it’s interesting base for some applications. We will see how good the compatibility is in the end.

Not Radius,Samba. But yes. In theory the Samba server can even run on a VM on the same PC(but that makes it really messy). Raspi or similar is far easier.

Univention offers a ready made distro for that, but not for ARM, though.

If you are into self-hosting: You can use Matrix on your phone with a self hosted Matrix server and a WeChat Bridge.

Afaik there are two different bridges and both are in Alpha, though, so you might need to try what works for you.

For getting the account you might be able to use an Android VM so your main phone stays clean.

There are templates for that. And yes,of course it is bullshit that we have to do that.

But it’s less work this way compared to installing Linux and (-the worse part-) teach it to the more technologically disadvantaged relatives who used Windows for 30 years before their retirement. Or to kids who just want to use the same stuff they use at school.

I absolutely would wish that Microsoft would stop their bullshit (it wasn’t even out of the possible options for them to make AD cloud only - but a lot of government customers complained). But I wanted to show people that there is a middle ground between submitting to that fucking cloud account and ditching linux all- together.

In a family and SOHO setting there is an easy way around it,even without alternative media creating tools and Win11:

Active directory. Yeah. Microsoft. But not really.

Samba can be used as an AD server for ages now, it’s free, cheap and can run on a Pi or some NAS. These days it’s fairly easy to set up as long as you only use it for Identification services and basic networking. And Microsoft won’t bother you with their shit ever, as they don’t dare to push corporate clients too much.

I can recommend it very much. There are also full GUI distributions available,e.g. univention.

Smart Speakers. And it turned out it would have been the perfect spot for one of the hotspots.

When we renovated we put Ethernet everywhere - according to my sparky we might have more ports than some medium businesses he did.

…And I still find areas where I would need one or two more. …And I am still mad at myself for not putting a run into the kitchen and the bathroom.

Not to forget the war cry of every LAN Party:

“Who did not terminate?”
