A group of Manchester United supporters are plotting a series of protests to make it clear they do not want Mason Greenwood to be reintegrated into the club’s plans. The fans, who are all regular Old Trafford match-goers, intend to make their feelings clear outside the stadium before United’s opening game of the season at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday. A banner has been made, in United’s colours, with the message: “Female Fans Demand No Greenwood Return – End Violence Against Women.” “It’s time for the club to stand up and make the right decision,” one of the organisers told The Athletic, speaking on condition of anonymity due to fears of being targeted by Greenwood’s supporters. “It’s time to say, ‘We have high standards at United about how we expect players to conduct themselves and, if you do not meet those standards, you need to be moved out’. “This is a tipping point for the club. Are they going to side with commercialism and trophies and money? Or are they going to take the side of match-going fans, and the club being a social and community institution that we can be proud of, and proud to have as part of our identity?” Greenwood, 21, has not played for United since he was arrested in January 2022 relating to a tape being released on social media of an alleged sexual attack. He subsequently faced a police investigation resulting in charges against him for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Greenwood denied all the alleged offences. *continued in article*

I genuinely question whether he has the quality required for United though? He hasn’t played professional football for something around eighteen months now - no amount of training will make up for that.

Tbh, it would be very funny if United brought him back and he played like shit.

Eh, why? I was under the impression that this is because PSG owners agreed to a very stupid contract and Mbappé is holding them to it.

Republic of Ireland international Harriet Scott has revealed that she is stepping away from football to become a doctor. The Birmingham City defender has been studying to become a doctor at Keele University for the past five years alongside her football career. After completing her studies earlier this Summer, Scott has decided to step away from football and take up a full-time role as a doctor in England with the National Health Service. "The last 5 years have been some of the most challenging of my career," begins Scott's social media statement. "Balancing a medical degree with professional and international football has been exhausting. I was told so many times that I couldn’t do it and it wouldn’t be possible. So, I made sure I did it. "This year meant, final exams, 100 appearances for Blues, qualifying for the World Cup, graduating as a Doctor, winning Student of the Year and being involved in the World Cup over in Australia. I am very proud of myself. "For now, it’s time for me to take a step back from football and decompress. I will be starting work as a Doctor in the NHS and look forward to helping my patients. "Thank you to everyone who has supported my journey over the last 5 years. "H, x." The 30-year-old began her career with Reading before moving to Birmingham in 2018 where she went on to make over 100 appearances for the West Midlands club. She also made 24 appearances for Ireland and was part of the travelling squad that went to Australia for this Summer's women World Cup.

Hold on, I found a non-paywalled article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-03-03/spain-france-canada-player-boycotts-paradox-of-power-womens-game/102037590

It’s a great read, if rather depressing.

And yeah it’s an absolute shitshow. Feel bad for the Spanish team who are the strongest they’ve been in a long time, but have to deal with this situation.

Here’s a good article by the Athletic about it (paywalled though.)

Short version, fifteen players (mostly from Barcelona) protested against unprofessional treatment from Vilda and his coaching staff, and insufficient resources and backing from the federation. They requested not to be called up to the national team. Federation supported Vilda fully but later offered a compromise on certain issues, which is why some of the fifteen later returned for the World Cup. However, Spain are still missing key players who are continuing the boycott, most notably Mapi León.

I’m inclined to to believe the players on this, you don’t have fifteen players refuse to play for their national team (with public support from another three, including Alexia Putellas) without having some serious problems.

Reminder that the Spanish football federation are a bunch of cunts (especially Rubiales) who would rather save face than support their players, and that Jorge Vilda is a useless, disgusting fuckwit who only got his job because of nepotism.

I just steal them from Reddit lol. I actually asked how to clip goals myself once, but I can’t be arsed fiddling around with that, and in any case I doubt anyone wants to see my shitty illegal stream. Let me know if you find a good source!

Yeah, the backlash would be massive but it will probably happen. Wonder if he’s still got the quality required for United though - he hasn’t played professional football in what, a year and a half? Might get loaned out somewhere.

Best to err on the safe side imo. There’s already a lot of misogyny about the women’s game, and a post like this could be seen as adding to it.

Fuck Rubiales, he would rather ruin Spain’s chance at a World Cup then admit the players were right about that useless unprofessional cunt Vilda.

Very happy for Japan though, amazing result and I’m always happy when fellow Asian countries do well.

only caught the last 30 minutes of Germany - Colombia but I still feel emotionally drained

Is he? Well fuck, I could have sworn I saw somebody say that. Thanks for the correction!

Can’t wait for the Haaland comparisions just cos they’re Norwegians with similar names.

Some petty fucker downvoted both the Argentina goals I posted. Can’t blame them tbh, I’ve done the same myself.

It does that? Ah fuck, guess I’ll just mark all of them as Undetermined then. One of my favourite things about r/soccer is seeing users from the same country segue off into their own language, it reminds me how international football is.

You’re welcome! Would be criminal not to post haha, fucking amazing

Apparently Lemmy has been marking all my posts as English, even when they’re not 😭 my sincerest apologies

PHILIPPINES WOW WHAT A MATCH 🙌🙌 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

You know what would be hilarious? If Mbappé went to Barça. Obviously it’s not happening, but I so so wish it would…

Genuine question, not really related to this case: is the OK signal usually associated with racism in the US? My friends and I just use it to sign okay, I’ve literally never heard of this other meaning.

First twenty minutes I was genuinely laughing at how bad Miami was. Their goalkeeper is a wonder.

Busi is such class, I love him. And what a debut for Messi!!
