That would mean exclusives everywhere. Everyone would try to force some game pass on us, until our only choice to get an OK selection would be having 4 subscriptions. Or piracy.
With Steam, I get a well integrated platform for buying, updating and launching everything with the correct compatibility layer.
That’s more convenient than piracy, so I use it.

Terminology is confusing. Lowercase-c conservatives want to keep the status quo as it is. But fact is that e.g. in the USA, legal access to abortion has been the status quo for 50 years.
So nobody can say that the status quo has been anything but that in the US. So uppercase-C “Conservative” just means “reactionary” now, because that’s what it is to roll back a 50 year old right.

That reminds me of cool spot, the 7-up mascot game. It was so fucking hard!

That was my immediate reaction here: one of the reasons the xz backdoor was possible is that nobody is going to question the idea of shipping a tarball to spare users from having to touch Autotools.
Of course I wouldn’t think of manually hacking together Makefiles since I come from languages that have either the One True Build Tool or a standard for packaging and defining build backends.
I think the author’s aversion to build tools trying (and apparently failing) to make everyone’s life easier is more a statement about how much C/C++ have suffered from not having a standard for packages.

I have a pixel 6 and notice some lag in scrolling. Could it be that you don’t use srcsets but instead huge screenshots no matter the device screen?
Yeah, and these mods were so good that they became their own games.
If you want to do that, you’re a game developer. So license (or develop) an engine, and also pay for all the non-permissively licensed other code you use.
Congratulations, you’re now on a solid base for charging money for your game.
