After they abandoned the multiplayer cause they coudnt give it money printing shark cards?

At least the multiplayer got attention, the single-player game never got anything after the initial release.

Here’s an article that mentions it

As a rule of thumb, most adapters with a female USB-C socket on them are non-compliant.

You can also look at the USB spec yourself

USB Type-C receptacle to USB legacy adapters are explicitly not defined or allowed. Such adapters would allow many invalid and potentially unsafe cable connections to be constructed by users.

FYI essentially all adapters with a usb-c female connector are non-compliant.

When people talk about USB-C potentially damaging devices, it is because of non-compliant adapters, chargers, cables, etc.

So just keep in mind that while the risk may be minimal depending on your use-case, these adapters can be dangerous and risk damaging your devices.

A modern Pixel phone could probably run the AI models locally but they would likely be more limited and it wouldn’t be particularly battery-friendly.

An old iPod touch wouldn’t be able to so I think it’s safe to assume those functions were happening on Apple’s servers.

In fact I would be confident claiming that no mobile devices are currently running these models locally, whether you are using Google, Apple, or some other photo app.

Like I said, it may be possible for some modern devices with TPU chips to run them locally but that is not happening currently and would probably not be as good as experience if they were

This is exactly why I was motivated to start using Immich instead. Using any of these corporate services you are giving away your privacy for convenience.

No, this stuff actually requires somewhat heavy ML processing that most phones probably couldn’t do locally.

I think many people don’t consider or overlook the fact that by “necessity” we allow companies like Google/Apple/Facebook full access to our photo libraries for the convenience of these features.

If you have the technical skill to I highly recommend trying out immich. It has all those features you are looking for: face matching, memories, photo maps, object recognition, etc. but those models are run locally (on your self-hosted server) instead of depending on Google/etc so your privacy is protected.

Nah Beeper/matrix have had this capability available FOSS for much longer

No matter how poorly Apple’s implementation works with Google’s, this will be a net positive for consumers.

Apple finally giving in allows RCS to become a true standard that works across any mobile devices. That will motivate developers and the industry as a whole to continue to improve upon it.

The initial release may be underwhelming but in the long run this week be good for everyone.

If Google’s implementation remained the defacto “RCS” that everyone used there would be no motivation to add things like encryption to the standard as everyone is using Google’s anyway

Beeper, and the open-source Matrix bridges it uses have been around for a while now, including the iMessage bridge.

Definitely a better choice than Nothing’s “we don’t believe in open source” sketchware

The biggest thing is attachments like photos/videos.

While MMS pretty universally sucks, Apple is very aggressive with the compression they apply to attachments over MMS so the resulting user experience is garbage akin to what we used to have when MMS was new.

Modern phones from other manufacturers will make use of the full MMS attachment size available, typically 100MB or more (depending on your carrier) iPhones will compress that video down to a couple MB regardless of the higher capacity available.

I would not be able to get by without that feature, it’s pretty much the only way I pay in-store now.

500M/250M $80/month

Seriously overpriced here. I used to pay $25 for fiber 1G/1G

I wish I knew that existed before Twitter shut down the API. It doesn’t work anymore.
