Every game borrows from other games’ ideas and mechanics

It’s not only games, this is just straight-up how art works. Culture develops over time. Of course capitalism had to get a middleman in there lol

Damn, I thought the holidays were filled with suicide due to loneliness. I should have known it was capitalism. It always is

It really feels like we’re peasants, gathered by the fire, gossiping fearfully about the prospect of a succession war

It’s baffling because usually companies have to be forced to give up monopolies by the government

They’ve been making Windows look more and more like a console OS for years, so I’ve been expecting something like this

So the guy in charge of Amazon’s video games doesn’t understand video games. Sounds about right. I was already skeptical of what they could pull off after the New World fiasco. I don’t think we’ll be seeing anything other than the video game version of Amazon’s stolen and enshitified products

It’s actually pretty unpopular in most games with hard end game content. Raiders want the best gear to come from the hardest content to make their efforts valuable and to feel rewarded.

I must spend too much time around crafters lol

Personally, I prefer it because it brings more types of play into endgame, and encourages socialization. That’s the kind of opinions I’ve seen as well. So long as raids give other rewards people want, it isn’t a problem. I think being able to raid for materials is also very cool

ESO has classes, but yeah, they can fill multiple roles, and you also take skills from other trees to complete your builds

SAO was classless, with players leveling up individual skills instead of their character as a whole (though of course there was also a player level). ESO is pretty similar in that regard, but RuneScape might be closer, especially since we know SAO has serious crafters. The biggest showpiece for SAO seemed to be the complex and expansive skill system. Not only did Kirito have his sword skills, and dual wielding, he also had alchemy and fishing skills, and some kind of thrown hunting needle.

It also has open-world housing, which is super rare. The only game I know of with something similar is Archeage, but AA is PvP focused (and I haven’t played it in like 8 years). Probably works a lot better in a game where you know the exact number of players, and it can’t increase lol

Crafted gear was better than drops, which is a in-game economic choice by the developer. It’s hard to have serious crafters without that, so it made sense for the story. I don’t have much personal experience with games where that is the case, but it’s usually pretty popular.

Probably the thing that really set SAO apart though, and something I don’t think we’ll ever see in real games, was the fact that floors were only cleared once, so the game was less an MMO grind, and more an organized campaign by the hardcore players. The mega-dungeons that had to be mapped by players worked well in this system, but would probably be annoying in an actual game. At its heart, it was a single player RPG created for Kirito, because it had to be for the plot. A lot of it’s “systems” can’t really translate to real life

I also enjoy the difficulty of XIV’s serious content. Savage raids blind are super fun. I’ve not tried any ultimates yet, but they look crazy lol

Makes sense. I wouldn’t exactly call Skyrim challenging. It would be crazy for them to put a high barrier to entry on a new genre of game that a lot of long term fans are already hesitant to try

Okay, so that is all it is. I feel like that didn’t need an article lol

Two layers of popups before I even see the page is too many, but isn’t the issue resolved? Do they just mean it’ll take time before all the individuals hosts are rolled off the failed update?

Thancred dying could be interesting if they want to bring Ryne back. I think Urianger is the obvious choice though, since he finished his arc with Moenbryda’s family

As long as it’s not one of the twins 😭

That last line makes me worried we’re going to be losing a main cast member

I was going to recommend Worlds Adrift, but looking it up for this post is the way I discovered it was shut down 5 years ago lol

I did not realize it had been that long since I played it. Sadge

Proof that when you give devs the time they need, they make a game people actually like

Have you done Eureka? If you love Eureka, you’ll be fine. Otherwise, id recommend playing it separately on its own

The way they see it, their best interests don’t involve those of the game studio. Buying a studio does two things. It gives them a new business to latch onto and suck all the money out of quickly, and it eliminates competition in the gaming industry. Killing the studio still meets both of those goals. And then they just move onto the next one.

Subnautica is replayae just because the world is so beautiful

Mine was never willing to work on WiFi, so it got put in a box for a while until I ran my own Ethernet cables all around the house. Now it’s great!

Mine was $1! I love it. I just bought a wireless mouse and keyboard for it, because it’s honestly just a great way to stream stuff. Now my computer can be in my living room, and my office at the same time!

Yep. I begged my parents for a RuneScape membership as a kid. Now I pay for my own subscriptions. If someone wanted to buy me a game time card for FFXIV though, I would be far from upset

Imagine how steep that line would be if the fossil fuel lobbies hadn’t been fighting it tooth and nail all these years

I’ve been playing the Witness for the first time, and it’s great. I’ve been doing it as part of a group randomizer though, which makes it so hard lol One day I’ll figure out what all these shapes mean

Just, uh, don’t play the intro around those who scare easily.

But that’s me 😭

Supraland is great. I intentionally try to avoid going the right way when I play single player games, but in this one, that kept just putting me where I needed to be lol

Roelof Botha, Lead Independent Director of the Unity Board, has been appointed Chairman.

Imagine working in gaming with an actual name that’s just the beginning of a Deez Nuts joke
