Good second half too:

That search/SEO is broken seems to be part of the game plan here.

It’s probably like Russia burning Moscow against Napoleon and a hell of a privilege Google enjoy with their monopoly.

I’ve seen people opt for chatGPT/AI precisely because it’s clean, simple and spam free, because it isn’t Google Search.

And as @caseynewton said … the web is now in managed decline.

For those of us who like it, it’s up to us to build what we need for ourselves. Big tech has moved on

That’s why we are all here.

It’s interesting to think that Big Tech might just move on from the Web, leaving it to us ordinary humans to go back to the way we were doing it in Web 1.0 just with fancier tools at our disposal. I quite like the idea.

It feels like there’s an opportunity for shenanigans here.

I suppose it depends on your requirements. I tried a lot and, finally, Pear fitted the bill. I was happy enough with it to get the Pro version and haven’t looked back since.

Just you. Or, at least, not me.

Just give it half an hour or so of usage. When I got it up and running, I thought it wasn’t working properly but it was either learning or just getting bedded in as it just seemed to kick in and has worked smoothly since.

Have you tried downloading the relevant dictionary? If so, can you give a screenshot of what it looks like when you long press the space bar, as seen in the second screenshot m

To enable languages: Settings > Languages & Layouts. It might just take a bit of usage for all the corrections and suggestions to kick in.

To switch languages or keyboards: Long press the space bar.

If you haven’t enabled number row in Preferences, just long press Q to get 1.

I’d also recommend:

  • Downloading the emoji dictionary 👍
  • Having a root around in settings
  • Reading up on the “hidden” functionality

The power of Heliboard, and the reason it got me to abandon Gboard where others failed, is in the last two.

Hope that helps - I am still new to Heliboard (but I am already sold on it) and a power user might have better insight but that might be enough to get you going. If not, ask away.

Yes, it’s a long list of emojis, a reply below links to how you can add an English emoji dictionary. I just followed the instructions and it works well. 👍

I switched to this a month or so ago and haven’t looked back. The only thing I miss is the ability to add gifs but that’s not a big deal.

And that’s me done with Disney+ - big price hikes and the removal of password sharing have killed the value in it.

Plus, I have such a massive backlog of things to watch, I wouldn’t even notice.

If there’s no-one to drive you home, sometimes you need to take matters into your own hands.

bone apple tees

I think you should start the community ASAP.

Yeah, I have my fingers crossed for a Fediverse IMDb as I have been moving me stuff over to Trakt but they could get snapped up and pull the same BS.

Quillpad - it’s almost identical to Google Keep.

edit: see this recent discussion on note-taking apps.

At the moment, it is Nextcloud but I believe the plan is to give more options.

Quillpad is like an open source Google Keep and you can use Nextcloud to sync it all.

Ideally, I’d want a way to import my Google Keep lists into it then I could bin Keep for good.

And he’ll claim it’ll be part of the Fediverse at some point probably, until the regulators get off his back and he can start stealing eyeballs again (which is an unusual hobby but the super-rich are strange creatures).

That’s the one. I’m not 100% sure of the history but it’s an attempt to get it working here and progress is already promising.
