Like I said in my edit, I’m not entirely defending Bethesda here. I’m just trying to look at this case specifically and not let their entire history color it, as difficult as that may be. FOLON is somewhat turning this into a blame game, where I don’t think anyone’s really at fault except arguably Bethesda in that specific case.

Even with all of that in mind, Bethesda should have been in better communication with modders. There’s no doubt here. They are critical part of the overall success and staying power of their games.

From a business/PR standpoint, Bethesda missed a great opportunity to regain some rapport with the community post-Starfield




They’re saying this will take more than 2 months. They’re upset because it effectively undoes a lot of their work, which sucks, but that was always going to be the case unless bethesda went out of their way like a year ago to tell them what was coming. And remember, these guys aren’t even in the creator club or in any way communicating with Bethesda. I just think it’s a little unreasonable to be so independent while expecting Bethesda to anticipate their very specific needs.

I wish Bethesda did and maybe I’m being too generous but idk. Just not really sure I am 100% sympathetic to their plight here.


I get this project is a big deal for some folks but having a hard time accepting the argument that I shouldn’t get a better visual/overall game experience because of a mod I’ll never play and their apparent lack of communication with Bethesda. They just expected to be that high of priority? Am I reading this wrong?

Edit: reading through comments I’m a little more sympathetic to modders writ large than I am this team specifically but I get the frustration. Bethesda could’ve done everyone a solid and given a little heads up. Still, it sounds like this project has been massive in scope and basically any changes were going to cause them issues so that’s worth considering here too.

I know that works for Kbin users, but I’m not always 100% clear on what works for other instances, so I just go with my old habit of linking the URL. Sounds like that’s a bad habit though! Appreciate the tip


We’ve had trouble over at true gaming getting things cooking as well. Maybe I can reach out to the mods and see if there’s some cooperation to be had here as we’re likely too fragmented at present. I’ll talk to our mod team today and see if we can think of something.


Input symptoms and patient info -> spits out odds they have x, y, or z -> doctor looks at that as a supplement to their own work or to look for more unlikely possibilities they haven’t thought of because they’re a bit unusual. Doctors aren’t gods, they can’t recall everything perfectly. It’s as useful as any toxicology report or other information they get.

I am not doing my edits by hand. I am not using a blade tool and spooling film. I am not processing it. My computer does everything for me, I simply tell it what to do and it spits out the desired result (usually lol). Without my eyes and knowledge the inputs aren’t good and the outputs aren’t vetted. With a person, both are satisfied. This is how all computer usage basically works, and AI tools are no different. Input->output, quality depends on the computer/software and who is handling it.

TL;DR: Garbage in, garbage out.

I know people tend to joke about having a Civ addiction, but the number of people who have in fact binged an entire night or more playing civilization and have experience addiction like relationships with it should tell you that the line is thinner than I think most people are comfortable with.

Few games are “just good old fashioned fun.” Every game is designed to draw our attention. The distinctions between intent/accident, “it’s just fun”/designed to be addicting, etc. are not always very clear.


Fine tuning a gameplay loop so people keep playing (and maybe spending money) isn’t as far from designing something to be addicting as most people would like to think. Hence why gaming and gambling addiction dovetail so well.


I think you’ve got some valid points but you’re completely ignoring how countless corporations have invested collectively probably trillions of dollars over decades into how to best reach and sink their talons into us.

Minecraft may be an “accidentally addicting” product (though I’d somewhat dispute it), but iPads sure aren’t just addictive by accident. No tablet is. They’re designed to be from the ground up, like every major social media app and then some.

Parents need to parent, but to act like any of us are on an equal footing with the Facebooks of the world is to completely misunderstand the imbalance of power here.


Why do you reduce it to “forcing their view on you because of their kids”? What’s this based on? How is your advocating for the opposite not you forcing your views on others by your definition? Why is your bar for what is appropriate more correct than anybody else’s?

I hate this response. It is so canned, so dismissive and hand wavy, while also being completely incorrect. It’s the kind of useless argument the right likes to parade around when they want to justify a business being cruel or even acting illegally in some cases.

No, companies cannot do literally whatever they want. There are absolutely rules that govern the types of media that can be in certain spaces. There are different TOS’s for different kinds of access to content, different hurdle
and benchmarks that must be met for certain users to access certain content. Twitch cannot do whatever it wants with impunity.

I think there are a lot of valid arguments on both sides of this debate here, and I am also very much against “think of the children.” But no, again, twitch cannot do whatever it wants here. There are different laws in different countries that they have to consider.

Edit: let’s also not forget that I am within my rights to express my disdain for what a company does, regardless if they have the right to do it or not. And to imply it is somehow immoral or otherwise reflective of our (lack of) intelligence to critique a company is patently absurd.


It’s telling that the two comments disagreeing with you are by one person who doesn’t use twitch and another person who hasn’t used it in years.

Needless to say I think you’re totally right. I don’t want to make it a prude platform but I also think treating it like Only Fans isn’t right either.


It is unbelievable how poorly managed overwatch has been for years now. Talk about a cash cow they just refused to feed properly



It plays half as well as a console and compatibility is pretty impressive but far from consistent. Each game requires research just to see if it’s worth playing on it and will always look worse/play worse than on console by a large margin unless it’s an older or incredibly stripped down indie game.

Anybody who chooses it over a console wasn’t seriously considering a console in the first place. They don’t fill the same gap. The same way even switch and Wii owners often still got a PlayStation or Xbox. The libraries and the entire play experience are wildly different.

I really really like the deck but I don’t recommend it to most people because it’s fun like having Linux on your personal computer is fun. You like to tinker and see what it can do, you like a specific kind of ecosystem, and you like that the restrictions on it are few and far between (aside from performance). But this comes at a cost of UX. The fact that you need to reboot it 50% of the time you swap between handheld and desktop mode is emblematic of the entire experience. If I’m on a switch and dock it, I press a button on a controller and I’m instantly going. Deck? Controller might need to be reconnected to Bluetooth from scratch, the aspect ratio might be completely wrong, the game might panic with the change, lots can go wrong and often does.

Again the fact that a simple update can soft lock your deck until you connect to home wifi is terrible. You have to deal with a lot of little frustrations that no other system has and it just isn’t seamless like other experiences.


I love my steam deck, but it is not consumer friendly in the slightest. It needs massive improvement from the UX front, especially switching between handheld and desktop mode. And don’t even get me started on how updates work out the box. If you are not on your home network and aren’t prepared for an update it can make it unusable.

It’s a great device but it is for a slightly higher floor of tech savvy users who are willing to tolerate jank and somewhat enjoy problem solving.

The steam deck isn’t competing with consoles. It isn’t even competing with the switch. It’s enticing to people who are already in the steam ecosystem and want a handheld PC to constantly tinker with.


I feel like if the headline was about PlayStation that a lot of people who share your view would suddenly be singing a different tune. Purely a “feeling” though. Not based on any concrete data lol

Bastion clicked immediately for me. Pyre is an oddball (hyuk hyuk) but I actually did find a good rhythm there and fell in love with it. I replayed it a year or so ago on True Nightwing mode and it was incredible. They’re just so good at making defeat a part of the game and it makes the stakes feel way more real. I’d spend sometimes 15min before a match planning my team and talismans and have these absolute nail biter matches. I got so emotionally invested in it lol


If you’re like me, just get over your pride and play on the easiest difficulty/use whatever cheese is effective. It’s a beautiful game worth experiencing and if it requires you to completely leapfrog the combat then so be it.


It was always a great game IMO, nothing fundamentally changed about it. But I also understand what you mean. I bounced off it once or twice because the combat system is very, very different and I wasn’t sure I was getting it. Didn’t quite find a flow.

Eventually I just sat down and beat it, because it’s actually not a very long game. Like 5 to 7 hours. And the story/music/art is just unbelievable.

You don’t need to get great at the combat. Just kind of learn what builds work for you and be a little flexible when they’re not working.
