The standalone was such a disappointment on release that it basically killed the game entirely. I have so many amazing memories with the Arma 2 mod. I’m glad people are still having fun with it
It totally always felt like that, and I was so excited for the standalone because I thought THAT would be it! And then they released a buggy mess that was in early access for like 7 years, and I, as well as many others, lost interest.
I do wonder if we could get the magic back, but I also wonder if the time has passed. DayZ was around before the battle royale explosion, and kinda led to it. It also came at a time when zombie survival media like The Walking Dead was at the height of its popularity.
I’m worried that any attempt at a similar game would just turn into a KOS deathmatch no matter what. The magic of DayZ was in the interactions you’d have with strangers, and roleplaying a bit.
I played it all the time for years after they made it available on standalone. Probably my most played game ever.
95% of the time, it’s a walking/running simulator. But the other 5% was so memorable. Granted, many of the bugs and issues it had in the beginning made it hard to forget, but I also experienced some wonderful, memorable gameplay!
I wouldn’t say that it is inexplicable. There are many high profile (ish) Twitch and YouTube accounts that feature Day Z content.
I’d say there are also relatively few games like it where randomness and organic player interactions are a huge factor. Plus there are many play styles like the solo runs (RunningManZ type content) or heavy PVP with teams and base building (Nezar type content).
There are also a ton of mods because the game is a “mature” ecosystem, so it keeps growing in weird and unexpected ways. Kinda like CS 1.6 did back in the day.

Is this game good? I heard it was good, then it became shitty, then I stopped hearing about it.
I just want to know if pants are allowed in Electro yet.

It really feels like there’s a game there that’s never been fully realized but would be super successful if somebody figured out how to do it right.

Man, Dayz.

Long live DayZ! 😄
