They’ve been used in embedded systems until very recently. You can even still buy one.

You make a good point about embedded systems, but these chips were discontinued in 2007.

Just because you can still buy vacuum tubes, doesn’t mean you should.

I can’t judge that. I486 structures are bigger and less complex so that the risk should be much lower.
