I wanted to love Sony’s Xperia 1 VII, but its outdated priorities made that impossible

The Sony Xperia 1 VII stakes its reputation on its multimedia capabilities, but I found the camera lacking at this price, and that's not the only problem.

TBH I will probably wind up getting it only because it has headphone and SD card slot. Hopefully it is rootable too though they have been weeding that out on some models as well.

The only reasonably-priced phone I have found that has a headphone jack and SD card slot is the OnePlus Nord CE Lite 3 5G (Or the Nord N30 5G for North America). If you’re looking for a phone with those specs + excellent camera, pass on this one. Camera is decent, maybe a little better than an older pixel phone, but nothing special.

Both the CE and N30 are supported by LineageOS (larry) if you want to flash a different ROM.

Yes, Sony is one of the last holdouts to make a flagship that still has both. They used to be really bad at software updates but have somewhat upped their ante on that. The price is still somewhat expensive and charging significantly slow (peak of 27 W is ironically slower than my budget Android phone).

3.5mm jack and SD card slot make a significant difference. I have a cheap phone but have a 256 gigs latter slotted in inside to give some storage. And former is even more important because there are lots of times when I am just listening to say, music or podcast in a still situation where true wireless buds don’t make sense. Why waste battery of expensive wireless buds when one can put decent IEMs in?

Moto G series (wink).

No, not any more, unfortunately.

Moto G84 from two years ago has been the last of their middle class phones with a 3.5mm jack.
Their flagships already dropped that long before.
On top of that, Motorola also started including ad-ridden crapware into their firmware.

I’m desperately searching for a decert replacement for my Moto G72, which will get its last security update in October.
There is just completely none that’s still featuring SD-card and headphone jack… :-(

The 2025 moto G and G super still have a 3.5mm jack.

They are low-end phones, though.

The point is, headphone jacks are completely gone from all mid-range and high-end phones.
With the exception of Sonys (which are overpriced for what you get).

The G super is mid range

That’s funny, I didn’t find a G Super on Google, so I assumed you meant the G Pro. That would be mid-range, but also is kinda old…
But while researching the recent models on Gsmarena, I came across the G Power, which I would consider mid-range. That what you are meaning?
Thing is, like the G Stylus models mentioned somewhere else already, this seems to be North-America-exclusive.
So, enjoy the choices you still have over there, while they still exist! I am slightly envious, though… ;-)

Oh maybe it was G power. They used to have a bunch of random names for the G line, but they’ve reduced them to G, G power, and G stylus. I currently have a G power. Before that I had a G power and before that I had a G super. That might have been when they stopped with the other names. I’m getting them mixed up.

I have a 2023 G Stylus 5g and it has both. Idk the non US model designations but I thought the current versions still had them.

Same boat here, I was also looking for a G84 replacement, the Stylus ones look good, but not available in Europe indeed 😔

Maybe see if the US models support your networks. I think they’re all the same except the marketing labels.

Not worth the effort importing one…
Because if something goes wrong, you are on your own.

I will probably try LineageOs on a used Moto G84.
If that doesn’t work, recent Fairphone is looking good, although lacking the headphone jack…
