Andi’s Writeup

Tesla faces mounting evidence of safety concerns around sudden unintended acceleration and braking issues across its vehicle lineup, with thousands of documented incidents between 2015-2025[1].

According to leaked “Tesla Files” obtained by The Guardian, the company received over 2,400 customer complaints about unintended acceleration and more than 1,500 braking issues between 2015-2022. This included 139 cases of emergency braking without cause and 383 phantom braking events[1:1].

Recent high-profile cases highlight the ongoing risks:

  • In December 2019, a Tesla Model 3 suddenly accelerated in a parking lot, jumped a curb and crashed into a tent at Stryker Corporation in San Jose[2]
  • In April 2021, Oliver Schuster died when his Model X veered off highway B194 in Germany and burst into flames[1:2]
  • In February 2024, a Tesla Cybertruck owner reported the vehicle “suddenly accelerated, got out of control and crashed into the railing” while using Full Self-Driving mode[3]

Tesla maintains these incidents result from driver error, stating in 2020 that “the car accelerates if, and only if, the driver told it to do so”[4]. However, independent researchers have identified potential technical issues. Dr. Ronald Belt, analyzing Tesla’s log data, found evidence suggesting sensor malfunctions could cause false acceleration signals[5].

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2024 report concluded Tesla “failed to adequately monitor whether drivers remain alert” when using driver-assist systems. The agency found Tesla only tracks crashes where airbags deploy - about 18% of reported incidents[1:3].
