I played the game solo to get to good enough stuff to play with friends in a hardmode server (they would have provided equipment if I asked probably, but I preferred exploring the game by myself first). Ended up barely playing with friends.
You could be like me and buy it on android, gog, Xbox, and steam (twice as I paid for my kid’s copy and then my own)… Although, tbh, all those copies were purchased over multiple years.

Already own it, but sometimes I want to buy it again for the same reason. But also to try to get certain friends to play.
If I had friends and my own set time to just game I think it would be fun. But those types of games are not fun alone for me.
