Mastodon is a piece of software. I don’t see anyone saying “phpBB” or “WordPress” has a massive child abuse material problem.

Has anyone in the history ever said “Not a good look for phpBB”? No. Why? Because it would make no sense whatsoever.

I feel kind of a loss for words because how obvious it should be. It’s like saying “paper is being used for illegal material. Not a good look for paper.”

What is the solution to someone hosting illegal material on an nginx server? You report it to the authorities. You want to automate it? Go ahead and crawl the web for illegal material and generate automated reports. Though you’ll probably be the first to end up in prison.

As opposed to moving to a decentralized instance?

Every lemmy instance is centralized, it’s not a bloody blockchain.

If you want shit with removable batteries, cool, go out and make your demands heard.

They have. That’s why the regulators are making these laws.

But why should your demands be pushed onto everyone else as “pro-consumer”

It’s pro consumer because it benefits consumers. As of right now, most portable electronics have a built in expiration date. Most people lack the skills to replace a built-in battery and official stores rarely do replacements, so it’s down to a 3rd party shop which is difficult for less knowledgeable consumer to find.

It’s the same reason why we have any regulations against anti-consumer practices. It’s because these practices often rely on deceptive practices and consumers ignorance. In this case, the consumers are not informed that the device they are buying is built to expire after a few years.

I don’t see any argument you could make about usb-c or removable batteries hindering your usage of the device.

Most countries mandate that products come with a warranty. I haven’t heard anyone saying “what if I want to buy a product without a warranty?” Because why would you?

Why do you have mixed feelings? Has massive industry consolidation ever benefitted the customers in the long run?

The US hasn’t shown much interest in breaking up big companies in the past two decades. Once this is done, it practically can’t be undone.

Microsoft is more powerful than most world governments. And it keeps expanding and growing.

"Megacorporation Wins. Consumers lose again. "

Would be the correct title.

Don’t we already have pretty robust laws when it comes to person’s likeness?

I presume most contracts cover this aspect mainly for the purposes of marketing and future references. Of course the actors probably didn’t expect the extent the current technology could allow their likeness to be exploited.

It would probably make sense to require more specific contracts for this purpose, and have previously signed general contracts become insufficient for using actors’ likeness for this purpose.
