The great windows 10 shutdown is coming in a couple of weeks and I still haven’t upgraded my wife’s laptop! The main holdup is backing up, it turns out that hibernation need to be disabled in Windows 10 to do a proper backup, otherwise there is some sort of encryption on the backup. I wasted 2 days on this already copying 500GB just in case upgrade fails.

Upgrading to mint of course!

Yeah this is going to affect android in multiple ways. I’m guessing that the emulators and YouTube apps are out, the Devs will have all their apps banned if they bother to register.

Personally I have a developer account but some apps I give away as open source. Now I’m going to have to register those apps and if one of them isn’t up to Google’s standards (whatever they say that is on the day) then ALL of my apps get banned!

I have multiple old android devices which can’t use lineagos because they are locked or just too obscure. But right now they can be used with f-droid apps for games and ad-free content. I’m guessing that’s going to change.

The barrier to entry will go up and even more old android devices will be thrown away. Make sure you buy a mainstream device that has a chance of being supported beyond the manufacturers 2 year support window - in my experience mobile and tablets actual lifespan is 4-5 years, up to 10 with new battery. Why are we forced to throw them away after 2 years? It’s a total scam.

Actually capacity exceeds the original spec. Battery indicator seems accurate though.

Thank you that was the idea, In the missing tutorial I explain that I used batteries from a power bank with a broken usb. So yeah re-using stuff, this tablet should last 10 more years at least! https://www.circusscientist.com/upgrade-your-tablet-with-replaceable-batteries/

Really? It never happened to me even after shorting one once… There are some super cheap ones at the local Chinese store I was thinking of trying out, the brand ones are pretty reasonable already though, so that’s what I use. Maybe will give the cheapies a miss at least for indoor projects

You are correct - I forgot to link to the tutorial page on my website where I’m pretty sure I explained that I’m fully aware of the risk and nobody should do this

If you get more likes on your comment I am willing to test this

Context I live in a country with an unreliable postal service and shit currency. Also batteries were free from an old power bank

Free batteries from an old power bank…

Geez did I not link to the tutorial here? That’s what happens when you’re in a hurry. https://www.circusscientist.com/upgrade-your-tablet-with-replaceable-batteries/

Also, no I don’t take it out of the house - and the batteries are from an old power bank so essentially free.

This is the best hack I have ever done!

Battery on my Android Tablet died, so I upgraded it with 18650 replaceable batteries. Tutorial with pics

I heard about the avast thing, but how are isp’s modifying web pages, that shouldn’t be possible with with https, right?

Thanks, I’m going to look at a rom soon, it’s my main device though and I don’t have a good track record when it comes to not bricking phones 🤣

Also there is the bit about unlocking the bootloader, I heard it’s not straightforward.

Yeah I’m going with they’re innocent. Just the UI with the install button and no explanation is not cool.

Xiaomi replaced my app from F-Droid with their own version
So this just happened - those of you who have a Xiaomi phone know when you install apps it has it's own "Virus Checker" screen which comes up before the app is approved for install. This is provided by Avast I just found out.. Anyway while installing an app from F-droid today I got an error message on this screen - which said "app from unknown source" and two buttons below - "Ignore" and "Install". So I clicked on "Install" since I wanted to install the app and then noticed that the install process seemed a bit different (I can't remember what happened exactly) but I checked the app on F-Droid and the version history wasn't available - which a notice says means the app was installed from Play Store or somewhere else. But I just installed it from F-Droid! So I tried another few apps and it happened again for one of them. I clicked around and there it was, some sort of Xiaomi app store installing versions of the app instead of the one I told my phone to install. I guess there is an innocent explanation for this - stopping people from installing malware and giving them a "correct" version of the app they wanted - but I have disabled it on my phone, I know what I am doing and if I want the cracked version it's because that's the version I meant to install ;)

Putting in my vote for Librera reader here. Also on f-droid
