Most carriers with lock the bootloader so it’s best practice to get the phone either A) directly from Google, B) from Best buy or some other second party seller, or C) make sure that whoever you’re buying from did A or B.
A used Pixel could be good like other people have said but the 8a should be coming out sometime this year and will probably be well within your price range. If you buy it directly, you can even install GrapheneOS on it if you want extra privacy!
Counterpoint: a 22-year-old has been a legal adult for 4 years in basically every western country, is allowed to drink alcohol, and can join the military.
The thing is, the kid has started realizing the data collection that’s going on and it’s interested in switching. That’s the only reason I’m genuinely pursuing this.
Does anyone know of a good privacy respecting (preferably FOSS) parental control app for Android? I'm trying to convince a friend to get a Pixel with GrapheneOS as their kids next phone but they won't do it unless it let's them control certain things.
They're used to iOS where apparently their kid can request to download an app and they can remotely allow the installation. They can also add screen time beyond the original set limit if the kids requests it.
Unfortunately, I don't think they'd be open to switching if it means losing their parental controls.
Maybe they’ll have more new features this time :/
