A head unit is the actual radio hardware in a car. Some of them can be replaced with after market hardware. Yes, when my phone is connected to the radio by Bluetooth, I have to keep the unit on and set to the Bluetooth input in order to hear notification sounds. If I have it off, or set to another input I won’t hear any notifications that come in.

In my state it is against the law to hold your phone while you’re driving so I keep it connected by bluetooth for calls. It’s not a problem when I’m listening to music or podcasts which I frequently do. It’s only an issue when I’m not listening to anything. I’ve looked into updating the car’s software but it’s already on the most current version.

Unfortunately I don’t have Android Auto capability in my car but thanks for the reply. Maybe this will help someone with a similar problem.

Notification sounds while connected to bluetooth
Every 6 months or so I go looking for a solution to this problem and still haven't found one. When my phone (Pixel 7) is connected to my car by bluetooth, the phone itself will not make any notification sounds. It is attempting to send all notification sounds to the car. The problem is, if I am currently not listening to any media and the head unit is off, I will not hear anything at all. The only possible way to hear it, is to have the head unit on and set to bluetooth input whether or not I'm listening to anything. This was not always the case. I think it changed after Android 13 was released but I'm not 100% sure.

Most of the smartphones sold in US are not iPhones.

This is just a demonstrably false statement that’s very easily fact checked. I’m not saying that to defend Apple. I’m a Google Pixel guy myself.

Yeah, I agree. I don’t understand that part. I just want to be able to change the theme. I don’t need anyone else to know that I did.

Even though I have the exact version mentioned in this post, I have been unable to find any flags in the debug menu that will enable the ability to change colors in a chat conversation. For some reason neither the post or the telegram channel it links to, do not mention which flags to enable. I’ve seen it mention on other platforms that “bugle.enable_custom_themes” is the specific flag, however that does not exist on the current beta version as far as I can tell. The version I have and the one mentioned in the post is messages.android_20240125_01_RCO0.phone.openbeta_dynamic.

If anyone has a suggestions, please let me know.

I’m not sure how anyone could trust any single company to manage all of their passwords unless you are storing the files locally. Seems like having a single point of failure is more of a security risk than using 2FA or passkeys.

I’ve never used a password manager before. I use 2FA or Passkeys on anything that supports them.

I did it. It just looks very specifically designed in the style of iOS. It’s not bad though.

They’re all pretty early in development so they have their bugs but so far I like Liftoff and Thunder the best. They both have a great UI. Jerboa was the one I started with first but now I am not able to login because of the whole lemmy.world version number thing.

I already have Thunder, Connect, Summit, Liftoff and Jerboa. I just thought I would play with all of them for a few weeks until I find the one I like best.

Same. Won’t let me log in. Liftoff is fantastic though!

I love that! A big middle finger to spez. lol

The auto loading thing on the feed is driving me crazy! I know it’s a bug that is being fixed. The sooner the better.

Great news! I hope the developers of Relay and Apollo do the same. The more options the better!

This is my concern as well. Having a phone that is water and dust resistant is far more important to me than being able to replace the battery. I haven’t had the need to replace a phone battery in probably more than a decade.
