Thanks, looks like I need to start saving, my Nokia 6.1 with Lineage will probably need replacing withing a year or 2.

Nice to read your experience with the fairphone. We’re looking at it as well. It’s expensive, but can at least be repaired when something breaks. I’m curious aboutt the custom roms though, as they are my main requirement, next to costs of max €100 per expected year of usability. (And as phone, it should be usable for a while)

Same here, especially as it was the Samsung S2 of my employer.

However, when you don’t try (prefferably on an expendable device) you never learn.

I just updated to Magisk 27 as well and saw strange behaviour as well, TZ reset to UTC (I’m in CET), permissions revoked for apps,… Also it required to reinstall to optimize for my device (usually this is only on a clean install).

I’d advice to check your wifi settings. Maybe ot reset the mac you use. (I use device mac at home and random everywere else)

I tend to limit myself to max €100 per expected year of use. It’s just a phone to me. My Nokia 6.1 was €300 and is still working. Main requirement is the availability of an alternatuve rom for it.

I get DNS errors on apkpure. I got the same on my own domains when bind changed how you need to setup dnssec, or finally depricated a very old method for DNSSEC. (I ssetup DNSSEC a long time ago) This invallidated my domains as they were unsigned. It looks like this. I need to check dns logs, but it looks the same as a dns outage.

On the shell you can use the command

adb shell mount

to see all mounted filesystems. This inclused the filesystems of your work profile. It could be required to run adb as root, then you need to enter

adb root

first

I’ve rooted all my phones since the 1st in '12 (Samsung S2) and I’ve been running Cyanogenmpd/Lineage since the 2nd. (Thag was the 1st of my own, the S2 was a company phone)

Now I’m running Lineage on all used devices (messing about with a Samsung A13 to get rid of all bloatware beforenit gets used). I’m not 100% degoogled, but I got rid of most junk. I still have some apps which Inpaid for, but I’m replacing them one by one. When that’s done, I’l degoogle the devices.

Nokia 6.1 Bought when released, still in use today. I tried Samsung A13, but that’s in disude until Lineage or another rom is available. It’s the only phone that survived 1-2 years of use, ever. (Apart from my indistructable Nokia 6130)

I love custom roms and even developed for CyanogenMod and LineageOS. However, that was for Samsung, Nokia and Motorola. Those roms have loads of bloatware. The Pixel has no or little bloatware.

When going without Google, custom rom and f-droid is the way to go. With gapps, the advantage will be that you get longer updates, as custom roms usually get more updates. That is, as long as somebody is interested in the device and developing for it.

Also, when rooting, the official roms usually refuse to update, a problem that doesn’t exist with custom roms.

Same. Made the mistake to buy a Samsung A13 assuming itnhas a rom. Alas, just the 5G, I have the 4G. Bootloader is already unlocked though.

Thanks for the warning, checked settings on all devices and corrected on some.

Time to look for a replacement I guess. The only thing I use is the icon size/grid settings.

They use those discs and no, they don’t scratch the screen. There is a thin adhesive film at the side that touched the screen. When the screen is to hot when you use itm like during games, there is a slight chance that the film gets loose. (had dat happen with 1 of the discs after years of use) The replacement discs are expensive compared to the pen, but I bought 2 pens in 2017, my wife stopped using them, but I use them daily and had to replace 1 disc in al those years.

I got my hands on 2 cheap predecessors (I guess, the 1.0 version) but either they were cheap knock-offs or a bad batch. Also the discs weren’t compatible (main reason I bought them). The 2.0 version is slimmer, which I prefer.

I’ve been using the Adonit Jot pro 2 for years now. Love how they handle, they are slim and light. No clue how they write though, as I don’t write on the tablet. There is no compatibility issue, as there are no electronics in it. For me it was a slimmer replacement of the cheap ones with a rubber tip that were damaging the screen’s protective film.

Thanks, I found K9 on F-droid. I used that years ago, no clue why I switched…

Now to find a foss alternative for Business Calendar that works on Android 13. Calendar specific notification sounds are great, but not when they are played hours after the scheduled item.

To be honest, not.

  1. my employer gives apple mobiles out
  2. anything usefull can’t be done on those small screens
  3. screens that are large enough to show anything useful aren’t portable
  4. when I’m out of the office/not working from home, I’m not available for work, so I don’t need to use android for productivity

Privately, I have an email client for emergencies (used aqua, but with the subscription junk now introduced, looking for a good FOSS alternative) and a calendar which I need to check more. That’s about it peoductivity wise.

When Android is old enough, yep. Android 13 needs an update of Titanium backup for it to work again. Alas, TB didn’t get an update since '19 so I’m using neo backup now. (Haven’t tested message restores yet)

Free for companies, not free for customers. There seems to be a difference.

It’s normal in the US for companies to have rights and customers to not have rights.

I got it via this XDA post. (version 2.2.0, I was off a tad)

I’m running it with the latest Lineage (20), Latest Magisk (26.3), Zygisk activated and LSPosed v1.9.1 (6990).

Until now I haven’t found a better alternative then minminguard. (Although I had to switch to the 1.20 version another developer based on the older versions to get it to work on Android 13) It works in all apps, not just browsers. (and the non-browser apps are the ones I want to block ads in)

What would be a good alternative then to minminguard.

Hmmm, then I’m happy that I bought the licence in '12 and it was useful… until Android 13. Now I know why restores on Android 13 fail.

Time to move on. I’ll checkout neobackup.

  • Minminguard as ad blocker (used with Magisk and lsposed)
  • Titanium Backup for real backups.

Thanks for your answer… the FairPhone was already on the wishlist, and it’s supported. Time to ditch Samsung I guess. (I use Smasung Tablets with Lineage, phone isa Nokia with Lineage as well)

CalyxOS is a tad limited on the hardware support though.

Yep. I even have some apks still available that aren’t available in the store anymore. Alas the data is the biggest issue now in Android 13 though. When it’s restored most apps just refuse to start. Time to dive more into this before putting a report in to the developer.

Developer options, ‘activate terminal’ and when rooted you can switch to root with su. That is an alternative when you use ‘adb shell’ to get rid of the bloatware.

I’m using Titanium Backup (for more then 10y now) on my rooted/custom rom to freeze or uninstall system apps (so I don’t know any other method). Main use of the app is full backups though, including apk. (so I had it registered with a license file purchased, so I can use it even on devices without google store)

When you have nothing else running in that work profile, it’s can’t snoop on it.

On the other hand, you have the phone with you, so privacy is already out of the window. ;) Also, as I guess you use google app store to install your apps in the main profile as well, google just gets 2 devices to track, 1 with waze, 1 with the rest.

When you don’t want google to track you, you either have to go FOSS all the way or switch to Apple (and be tracked by them). No clue if there is an alternative for waze on the reports part. The waze user reports depends on those users reporting to google, thus being tracked.

Depends on your banking app. In old Magisk versions you could hide Magisk for apps, but that is dropped since Magisk 24.0. I guess it depends on the banking app if they have a problem with rooted devices or not. The 2 I use don’t jabe issues with a rooted device. I don’t use NFC for payment so no clue if that’s an issue.

Edit: It looks like they added MagiskHide again in 26.1 and added a DenyList feature. I need to dive into this.

I’ve been using Lineage since it was called CyanogenMod (was maintainer for Samsung Tab S2). It is the cleanest rom I found. You’ll need a gapps (google apps) source, but there is Nickgapps that gives a core set that only gives google store and the required services, so you can add whatever you want from the store.

I don’t know GrpahenOS, but the only one even less bloated I know is AOSP, on which Lineage is based. You can add whatever you want, root is available via Magisk, which gives even more options. (Ad blocking via LSposed and MinMinGuard spring to mind)

I had a Nokia 8110 and 7110 which had a sliding mechanism to get the mic closer to the mouth (and to look cool), that made (some) sence. Now, I don’t see the advantage of a folding phone. Why make a phone shorter while making id thicker? I’m missing the ‘small’ 4" phones that looked like bricks compared to the old gsm models.

I bought a Samsung A13, but found that there is no Lineage for it, it’s dumped in the drawer and I installed the latest Lineage on my Nokia 6.1. Alas the Motorola’s (Moto G, G2, G4) had hardware issues to soon.

The hardware is great, software of <censored>. I love the tablets I have, but again, running Lineage.

When going for another device, Lineage support is main requirement, I don’t care to much about the rest. As phone Fairphone or google pixel are considered options for now, but the '18 Nokia 6.1 still works perfectly. Alas there are no relative small (< 5") phones anymore. Loved the size of the Moto G.

Wow, phone…

used apps:

  • Business calendar 2
  • Signal
  • Waze
  • Authy
  • AH (shopping app)
  • OpenVPN for Android
  • ZoomFX
  • Banking app

That’s about it, it’s almost always laying unused on it’s fixed spot. It has the smallest available subscription, as 0 min and 0 MB is a tad to low for me.

My main devices are my tablets, used for gaming and reading.

  • CSR Racing 2
  • Discord
  • Liftoff
  • World of tanks Blitz
  • World of warships blitz
  • Business calendar 2
  • OpenVPN for Android
  • 2 local news apps

When I look at it, I don’t even reach 10 used apps, let alone most used apps. (unless I combine, and then barely) And I installed Lineage on all with the smallest gapps set I could install without loosing store access.

No clue about the s pen. However, I’ve been using Cyanogenmod/Lineage Since the Samsung S2 (yep, that old thing) and use it on Tab S2, S2ve, S5e and Nokia 6.1. The last 2 have Lineage 20 running, runs smoothly, as you get rid of tons of Samsung/Nokia junk.

The Tab S2ve is finally to slow to run the worst written games (CSR2), but works perfect for everything else. (Even an old Tab 3 and Tab 4 run nicely with it, when you’re not running resource hungry games)

Longer software support is almost an assurance, as Samsung quits pretty fast. It just depends on the devs, the 2011 S2 (i9100) is getting Lineage 20 as well. It’s all about what the devs can do. (have hardware for)
