  • Press F12 to open the Debugger.
  • Click the “Network” tab
  • Press Ctrl+F5 to reaload the whole page (including previously cached files)
  • under the list of transfered files in the greyish bar above the debug console (if enabled…) you see the total number of requests the site made and the total filesize that has been transfered; lower is better.

  • I have a limited amount of bandwith on my mobile plan
  • if i know a game download is large i go home where i have broadband; i dont download large files over mobile internet
  • a text-only website can be rather small with only a few KB. It’s only when you get ““Designers”” that things start to bloat, because the system fonts are not good enough and 2MB in extra fonts no sane visitor will ever notice must be downloaded.
  • the marketing department REALLY needs those 10 extra trackers and analytics scripts that take 5s to load, even if they last looked at the visitor stats back in 2021 and the login has long been forgotten.
  • the CEO wanted that animated AI powered talking gorilla widget he had seen on a local tradeshow where the customers can ask product or website questions (spoiler: they dont!), which ads a few more Megabytes to each pageload even before you even use it.

… To the surprise of noone after all the trailers, over promises and announcements from the devs over the last year or so …

I think GTAO (and RDR2-O) is pretty much unplayable with all the obvious cheaters in each session. Rockstar doesnt even care if someone runs around with a K:D of > 1000:1, ruining the game for everyone else …

The earlier GTA games where quicker to develop because the computers did not have the CPU power or RAM to support large cities, many different NPC models, detailed cars, objects or enviroments. This means levels, assests and the engines where much quicker to develop.

if you double width+height of your map, you have to fill 4x the area with meaningfull content, belivable cities, scripted events, nature, streets, shops, maybe NPS who have a daily routine to walk from one place to another.

Plus, you have to create a large amount of different(!) buildings to place around your map, because you dont want to recognize the same house, shop, park or Parking lot multiple times in the same street. On top of that is car physics, traffic simulation, cop chase behavior and now apparently NPCs interact with each other.

None of this has been done before, and getting this right and bugfree is not trivial - see cyberpunk.

How was Trevor likable in GTA5? He is a psycho.

There is an enterprise windows version that comes without tracking, telemetry and auto installed crapware, but it costs more.

“Just switch to Linux!!!1!!” - yeah sure, and throw away the 3rd party software licenses I paid money for in the last 20 years, not to mention the games…

Still, someone has to finance it. In the worst case you have a high speed rail network with high operationg costs that nobody uses, but taxpayers still need to maintain.

Price per km of track goes up exponentialy the faster you want to go, which means they will either have expensive tickets or will be unprofitable.
