Italian neofascists considered building an authoritarian AI to solve unemployment. They are far from alone. - AlgorithmWatch

The neofascist party Brothers of Italy proposed to use Artificial Intelligence to assign young people mandatory jobs. The idea has a lot in common with “algorithmic solutions” to unemployment in other EU countries.

Now that is when you need a CIA intervention in your country

CIA intervention is how you get fascists running your country https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gladio

I wasn’t serious. I don’t trust the CIA at all. But imo some form of intervention is needed when fascists are about to take over a country. Everyone knows how horrible fascism is. I know it’s not ok to seriously judge a political movement but that one is dangerous for the society so it needs some enforcement

Oh I completely agree that resurgence of fascism in Europe is a very disturbing development.

In a chapter on work, they called for an “artificial intelligence system” that “traces the list of young people who finish high school and university every year and connects them to companies in the sector.” This, the authors of the chapter wrote, would finally solve "youth unemployment,” as “the young person will no longer be able to choose whether to work or not, but [will be] bound to accept the job offer for himself (sic), for his family and for the country, under penalty of loss of all benefits with the application of a system of sanctions.”

Wow. So just state-sanctioned slavery. Work or you lose all benefits for which you and your family contributed and get fined.

You know what’s weird? Conservatives generally think people are lazy and would rather do nothing at all than be productive. But their efforts to make policies based on that assumptions, which are invariably harmful and evil, really encourage me to do everything to oppose them locally.

Old news, it was just an absurd sentence from a guy as far from technology as reddit is from freedom. Too bad he’s now minister of Defense (but not of instruction at least…)

I’m not surprised. Italy has always been a fascist country at heart, fascism never really went away here. The amount of people still openly and proudly identifying as fascist is disgustingly high. It’s gotten better with the new generations but not as much as one would hope. Talks of mandatory work and military service have been circulating for years, the latter was still a thing not too long ago. I honestly can’t wait to get out of here…

With that said, the idea of basically having your future decided by an artifical intelligence is absolutely terrifying with how biased and nonsensical they tend to be. And I’ll be honest, even if that could be solved, I wouldn’t trust the Italian government to properly do so with how technologically incompetent it has been historically.
