I’m looking for a file manager or gallery app that will let me browse to particular directories easily (prefer a file manager interface for this), look at images I find in them, and (this seems to be the really hard part) easily rename them while I’m looking at them. I don’t want a conventional gallery app that just presents one huge list of all the folders it found anywhere on my device, as there can be several with the same name, and it’s tedious to figure out what directory each one is under. I need to be able to go to a particular directory, look at the images within, and rename them while looking at them - the quicker & easier the better.

Help?

Maybe Fossify Gallery? You can sort of view folders hierarchically via Three dots menu → Change view type → Group direct subfolders.

About renaming, you can setup some quick action buttons in the image viewer via Three dots menu → Settings → Manage visible bottom actions, which includes renaming, copy, move, etc.

Edit: also, in list mode (Change view type), albums show the full path to the parent folder, so e.g. you can have several folders with the same name in different places, and distinguish one another.

Yeah, that’s actually the closest for I’ve found for my needs, although I hate how the rename dialog obscures so much of the image - I’m dealing with documents, and often taking info from the image to use in the name I’m giving it.

I’m using its partner File Manager app to navigate to the directory, then when I click on an image I get a pop-up to select which app to open in (because I like options for different situations, I refuse to set defaults in Android), and select Fossify Gallery from there to work with it. It works okay, but it’s not as straightforward as it could be (and like I said, that rename dialog is absurdly large & obtrusive).

I personally use Aves Libre. It does let you easily rename files while you are looking at them (three dots menu, click rename), and if you set the default navigation view to “explorer”, you can see folder structure!!!

Alternatively, if you don’t want that to be enabled by default, you just go to the sidebar and click on “explorer”. There’s other options too, like “all collection” (which is normal gallery mode with all images), album view, tag view, and countries view (if there is location data in your photos)

starting page of explorer mode for me (when you go into the subfoldere you see a list of folders that contain images, and if you click the album-looking icon, you view an image gallery of photos within a folder.

Maybe this, I have been using it for a while https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/com.kaii.photos

Lavender Photos. Will just be named Photos in app list. You can switch to album view which essentially shows all directories, not quite file manager like as you asked though. But when you view an image you can rename it, just had a look if that works.

That is indeed a nice gallery app, but the lack of direct filesystem browsing prevents it from being useful for my particular needs. Thanks for the suggestion, though - I’m thinking of leaving it installed anyway. Will have to play with it some more.
