Good if true. Intel needs a break because the last thing we need is another monopoly in an industry where creating competition from scratch is near impossible.
I also hope they continue to upset the GPU market. The B580 is a huge break for those who want a usable gaming GPU that doesn’t cost 4x what a GPU used to cost.
The market for a good middle class GPU at a normal price is wide open and Intel could make a lot of bank if they do it right. Alas, Intel has the tendency to fail to capitalize on such openings; they probably set the price for those cards way to high to be considered a contender.
Intel’s implementation is still not a mature offering. If AMD releases a generation of cards that has any compatibility issues compared to nvidia they would get slaughtered, and that’s what intel did.
I really hope they don’t drop GPUs and they continue to refine them, because we need a true competitor.
My guess is that Intel GPUs going away completely is very unlikely. The reasoning being that they will need GPU IP for laptops and desktop iGPUs. Also they need cards for data center applications. I think the more likely risk is they scale back to only a couple consumer dedicated cards targeting a price they can sell in large numbers. So they don’t increase competition, but fill a gap at the low end that AMD and Nvidia mostly ignore. Not the worst thing, but I think we all want them to have more success than that.
My B580 runs all games I’ve been throwing at it just fine at smooth framerates and stability. As long as you don’t care about ray tracing and resolutions above 1080p. I’d say it’s perfectly mature for an entry level gaming GPU.
Although I admit I bought it only because my old GPU died and I needed something ASAP but didn’t want to pay a price that felt like highway robbery. I am still hoping for a reasonable mid-range GPU to eventually become available, even if it is a used one, just so I can upgrade to a 144K display and maintain smooth framerates.
It’ll come down to cost, really. Until recently intel managed to stay relevant because even if their output was tremendously expensive, it did also perform. AMD wasn’t the top performer in many cases, but it was incredibly cost efficient.
Now generally intel is not performing and is still more expensive than AMD’s offerings. Hope they stay around to keep AMD in check.
