I've been a Motorola fan for years, but an Android phone with no updates is my breaking point

Motorola's latest Android phone ships with Android 15 and a promise of zero OS updates. And it's why I'm done recommending Moto phones.

The phone gets 0 major Android upgrades though Moto isn’t the only OEM to indulge in these shenanigans. I had personally a phone from little known Techno (popular in South East Asia). Decent hardware for the price but it never went above the Android 12 it shipped with.

We need Linux phones! We want them now!

This is why brand loyalty is stupid.

The Motorola phone brand has been owned by Lenovo for some years now, not the Motorola that brought the Nexus 6 and Moto X. The behavior is of no surprise. It isn’t a brand borne of pride anymore, it is just a thing that makes money, maybe.

So far I’m happy with my Fairphone 5. Not exactly cheap, but I’d argue it is value for money in the end. Timely security updates, unlockable bootloader (though I haven’t yet) and updates for (at least) 7 years after launch. I haven’t had the need to swap any of the middle things yet, but I’m starting to suspect my USB port has a loose pin or something so I’ll probably swap that module soon. Glad that I can.

My FP4 is pushing it’s 5 year. I love how the FP6 looks but I can’t help but wonder if Fairphone is able to keep up with the software developement work. The last year has been shaky, between bricked devices and serious android memory bugs. I want to believe in the project but it’s getting harder and harder.

Even if the Fairphones aren’t cheap, I consider that they are great value, especially for someone who want to change the hardware themselves.

I like the concept of the phone and I tend to find that years after years they’re improving. Also, I’m happy to see that the Fairphone 6 is being sold a lot more than the other one.

Android needs to modularize itself more and separate the core OS from manufacturer changes, carrier changes, etc.

that was the whole idea behind Android Treble, but it didn’t get much support from manufacturers. Some of its features live on as SGSI (semi generic system image) which is not supported by many devices

It just needs to be the way Android works from that point forward, not something optional. If they want to have an Android phone, with the play store, and everything that comes with the ecosystem, that’s what they have to do. Manufacturers never want to change what they do.

I bought my last moto hoping it would land on the LineageOS supoort list before it EOL’d. That never happened, so I bought a Pixel.

Meanwhile, my Galaxy S5 went up to Android 11 on LineageOS. It started on 4.
