This keeps coming up but it seems kinda dumb. I can’t just go buy a new 80’s Honda civic because I don’t know how to fix mine, but I could probably repair old consoles if I had the parts. The weirder part is how the games industry can continually port or remaster old games and expect a profit but it doesn’t work that way for most of anything else. I don’t think it’s anyone’s fault if things don’t make it to the future. Games aren’t books and you can’t copy them in the same ways. Console makers can’t even write good emulators for their own hardware. I’m fine with bootleg backups as long as the IP holders can be forced to fuck off from stuff they were just going to dump in the abyss anyways.

This only affects people locked onto modern console ecosystems and people who don’t know piracy. The constant remastering and lazy re-releases of old games can be for worse where publisher or not the original developers can have the ability to change what isn’t acceptable today vs back then because investors want safe products. These articles can’t mention the benefits of piracy because of DMCA, it’s one of the few ways to “own” (or have a playable offline backup of) the digital media you want to enjoy.
