I actually liked not having a minimap in BL1. I missed it at first coming from BL2 but it made me get to know the areas a lot better, which in turn made the game feel more like a connected world.
BL2 felt more like a sequence of levels than an open world.
This could be due to other choices in the game design but I think the minimap plays a big part in it.
