Seems like China knows what AI needs to do to get economic growth, while the US develops stronger population controlling AI like Palantir and LLMs, which also can be tuned for controlling.
From what I’m reading, AI in China is focusing on solving real world scientific challenges and taking over physically punishing manual labor, such as farming, construction, manufacturing, freeing up people to seek out more fulfilling work. They’ve also focused on building a social/medical safety net, so I don’t see much downside to this dual-pronged approach, and note that if Western states redirected their energy and financial resources in this direction now, we’d be behind, but can still ensure generations behind us have a life that’s something other than the dystopian hell techbros fantasize building for our larger population while they hide away in their bunkers trying to command loyalty from servants with shock collars.
