The Story Behind the Game

Picture this: It’s 3 AM, and I’m doom-scrolling through job listings after my “mutual breakup” with Big Tech (yeah, that’s a fancy way of saying I got laid off). Four years at a major tech company, and suddenly I’m 32, unemployed, with a family to feed and bills that definitely don’t pay themselves.

But here’s the thing – instead of wallowing in self-pity with a tub of ice cream (okay, maybe there was some ice cream involved), I decided to do something completely different. Something… fun?

See, I’m JsonChao – that guy who somehow stumbled his way from a no-name college to the shiny offices of Big Tech. And while those four years taught me a lot about building scalable systems and surviving soul-crushing meetings, they also gave me enough savings to take a breather and ask myself: “What if I just… made something people actually enjoy?”

Enter AO3dle: Because Fanfic Readers Deserve Nice Things Too

So there I was, procrastinating on my job hunt by reading fanfiction (don’t judge, we all have our coping mechanisms), when it hit me. You know how Wordle took over everyone’s morning coffee routine? What if there was something like that, but for the millions of us who’ve spent way too many hours on Archive of Our Own?

That’s how AO3dle was born – my slightly chaotic love child that combines daily puzzles with fanfiction culture.

What the Heck is AO3dle?

Okay, imagine this: Every day, you wake up to a mystery fanfic challenge. The game drops hints like breadcrumbs – tags here, word counts there, maybe a snippet that makes you go “Wait, I KNOW this one!” It’s like being a detective, but instead of solving crimes, you’re identifying which coffee shop AU made you cry at 2 AM last Tuesday.

The game comes in two flavors:

The Daily Mystery: One secret fanfic per day. You get clues about tags, ratings, word count, ships, and little preview snippets. Can you figure out which fic it is? Whether you’re deep in the Harry Potter, Marvel, Genshin Impact, or any other fandom rabbit hole, there’s something here for you.

The Popularity Contest: Two characters appear on your screen. One shows their popularity score, the other’s is hidden. Your mission? Guess who’s got more fans writing about them. Get it right, keep your streak alive. Get it wrong, and… well, we all know the pain of a broken streak.

How to Play (It’s Stupidly Simple)

  1. Pick Your Poison: Choose between the daily fanfic mystery or the character popularity battle
  2. Make Your Guess: Use the clues wisely, young padawan
  3. Flex Your Score: Share your results without spoilers (because we’re not monsters)
  4. Come Back Tomorrow: Because addiction is real, folks

Game Modes to Keep You Hooked:

  • Infinite Mode: For when you really should be doing something productive but… nah
  • Daily Challenge: 10 rounds, same for everyone worldwide – may the odds be ever in your favor
  • Difficulty Levels: From “Baby’s First Fanfic” to “I’ve Read Every Fic in This Tag” (Easy, Normal, Hard, and Extreme)

Why Should You Care?

Look, I get it. Another game? In this economy? But here’s the deal – this isn’t just about killing time. It’s about celebrating something we all secretly (or not so secretly) love. It’s about those “OMG YES I KNOW THIS ONE” moments. It’s about discovering that amazing fic you somehow missed. It’s about proving to your group chat that you really ARE the ultimate AO3 veteran.

Plus, let’s be real – we’re all looking for that little dopamine hit during our coffee breaks. Might as well get it from something that speaks to our very specific brand of internet culture, right?

The Real Talk

I’m not gonna lie and say this will change your life or revolutionize gaming. It won’t. But it might make you smile during your morning commute. It might help you discover your next favorite fic. And it might give you bragging rights in your Discord server.

As a newly unemployed web dev trying to make it in the wild world of indie development, every player means the world to me. So whether you’re a fanfic veteran who’s been on AO3 since its beta days, or someone who just discovered the beautiful chaos of shipping wars, come give AO3dle a shot.

Ready to prove you’re the ultimate AO3 connoisseur? Head over to AO3dle and show us what you’ve got. Share your scores, challenge your mutuals, and maybe – just maybe – help a fellow tech refugee keep the lights on while having a bit of fun.

Because at the end of the day, isn’t that what the internet should be about? Making weird, niche things for our weird, niche communities?

Welcome to AO3dle. May your streaks be long and your guesses be accurate. 🎮📚

P.S. - If you hate it, blame the unemployment anxiety. If you love it, tell everyone you know. If you have suggestions, I’m all ears – seriously, I have nothing but time right now.
